Yep, TT has started to used eco cases now. Explains why there was a tear and creases in the cover art.

There appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel, thank goodness.

Yes, I do, which is why when I replace my eco-cases with proper cases, the eco-cases go in my blue box.

It's my belief that the "eco" stands less for ecological and more like economical in that it's cheaper for the studios to use those flimsy things. You can bet when I make my pre-orders this week I'll be insisting on a box instead of a bubble mailer.

Most products have more packaging than the food inside it. I think it was either at Trader Joes or Smart & Final, but they had sets of 6 apples all in these elaborate clear plastic flip boxes similar to an egg-crate to keep each apple in its own separate covered slot. Who needs their apples in a wasteful thing like that?!?

As far as eco-cases go, the amount that they get damaged and switched out by consumers who end up buying even more cases to switch them, I hardly doubt eco-cases are making that big a dent in the reduce-plastic movement.
At least plastic shopping bags can be reused for throwing garbage away in. Alternately, most of the grocery stores where I live take the bags back to recycle. What's the alternative? Paper sacks made out of more dead trees?

Agree but it does make you wonder who's running the show. You'd hope the replicator (Cinram) would at least get buy in from their customer (TT) first before implementing such a change since they're the ones footing the bill.

Let's put it this way...

BD cases are made from polypropylene. The ANNUAL worldwide consumption of polypropylene is about 50 MILLION metric tonnes . The amount of polypropylene saved by eco cases is below the threshold of measurment.

But they are likely cheaper to buy and ship in bulk. I wouldn't mind them so much if they were honestly described. If they were just called "Cheap-ass" cases instead of Eco cases, I could respect that .

I think people would be surprised how many people switch out all eco cases; I know I do. I bought a large supply of "real" original Vortex and Elite cases when it became clear the direction the studios were going, and I still have not run out. Discmakers could make a fortune if they would just keep making a supply of thick, original Elite cases to sell to collectors, but they are too stupid to realize it. The "real" Elite cases have slowly gotten thinner and thinner to the point that it's pointless to even order the ones without holes in them anymore, as they are barely any better. The cases Olive uses--that I used to hate--are now actually better than the elite current Elite cases. the whole saga has just been a pathetic joke on the consumer imo, and still pisses me off beyond belief.

I've actually just run out of my singles, to my chagrin; I liked the vortex singles but they don't seem to make those any more.

LOL. Unreal.

I've been really enjoying some of Twilight Time's releases... but come on man. This is just sad.

When you're 3000 limited edition, cost a premium to ship, you just cant do this. The big studios do it to pinch pennies, but even many of their releases still come in a standard case.

I have yet to see an eco case. However, Patrick Wayne signed the booklet in a weird spot. Took me a minute to find it.

I think the eco-cases started with this last batch of releases (Titus, Khartoum, Zulu, Man in the Dark, etc.). And hopefully as TT indicated, they will switch back to regular cases before the next batch of titles...

The eco cases are actually making things worse since people are throwing them away to buy normal cases. But don't tell that to Greenpeace or they'll make the studios sell just the discs

Nope, I don't believe in environmentalism. I believe in Conservation more taking care of what we have and being a good steward. Environmentalist will tell you what car to drive and this other crap. Sounds good on paper but in practice is a load of crap. And yeah eco cases are a waste. One...it takes the same amount of energy to press the same thing. Your still wasting the same amount of gas to get the material there and same amount of electricity to run the machines that press the case. Like cine said, more the likely I'm going to throw it away and replace with a non Swiss cheese case. Thus making more trash.

Anyway....hurry TT and let us know when the Blob is coming out. And Birdman of Alcatraz too please.

Actually yes, paper sacs are bio-degradable. Plastic is not. It may "break down" into smaller pieces but it is still plastic! It does not become useable as any type of nutrients for the flora or fauna...

Frankly, I'd be surprised if more than a few dozen people outside of this thread bother. There's a large contingent of the North American population who would rather microwave frozen entrees than cook a meal, and there the results are pretty palpable.

Buying empty blu-ray cases that are a bit sturdier so that they can sit more securely on your shelf?

Without insulting anyone (because I do understand why eco-cases are inferior, though I don't really give a shit) this is strictly the realm of the borderline OCD ubergeek. And not even all OCD ubergeeks, because as I say, I don't qualify.

Having said that, I received a blu-ray from the UK last week, and it did feel less flimsy. On the other hand, it took up about 1/4 more space on the shelf, and I sure as hell can't spare it, even if I had the inclination to go out and buy a few hundred empty plastic containers to replace the plastic containers containing very slim, highly resilient discs. Though I sometimes lose track of what's on said discs when I spend too long on these forums.

I've had the best luck with orders of 3.

The point of things like eco cases is they use less plastic to make and subsequently weight less, which uses less fuel to ship. Which costs less money. Basically what you might call "Conservation" of resources.

I'm not sure where your disconnect between words and their meanings is rooted, but I'll assume if they were called "Conservative Cases" you would love them.

And just to throw this out there, in my statistically insignificant personal experience, I have had more broken Criterion cases than broken eco cases. Just sayin'.
