I would assume that they would release all of the other films not on Blu-ray from the Woody Allen DVD box sets (which happens to be 12, as they indicated).

I've just got an answer on Facebook. It is the 12 UA/Orion movies that they have got the rights to.

Plus more Elvis movies.

I'd be happy getting all these. I do wish Warner Bros. would hurry up and release Play It Again, Sam too.

I'm not surprised; they were looking into obtaining the remaining MGM Allen films.

Well, Purple Rose is one I'm definitely going to order; that's one of my favorite Allen films...

EDIT: Just received my shipping notice for my TCM order (that I managed to use coupons on) for The Train, The Mechanic and Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison...

I really hope they do a 1.37:1 transfer of PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, or crop it to no more than 1.66:1. The 1.85:1 DVD (and the original theatrical showings I saw) cuts off way too much of the picture, especially on the classic film clips and pseudo-1930s film clips. Projecting it in the theatre the picture had to be periodically re-framed up and down from scene to scene (but rarely was). I happen to have an old 35mm print of this (though sadly no longer have a working projector) and the film itself is a full-frame 1.18:1 image but watching the full 1.18 frame looks rather awkward with too much head room. The picture seems to be composed for 1.37:1 projection, as it definitely looks best that way and that format certainly best fits the era it is trying very successfully to evoke. Cropping to 1.66:1 should look passable, but if the Blu-ray is at 1.85:1 or 1.78:1, I'll pass on it even though it's my favorite Woody Allen film.

If MGM simply supplies already-done HD masters we may be stuck with an overly-cropped 1.85 version, but if anyone from Twilight Time reads this, perhaps they can convince them to do an alternate aspect ratio transfer (as on Criterion's ON THE WATERFRONT and a couple of Olive releases like THE TRAP). If only one aspect ratio can be included, then 1.37 is the best choice with THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, since anyone who prefers a widescreen picture can simply zoom in their monitor or projector with minimal loss of quality (as I do whenever I run RIOT IN CELL BLOCK 11, SUDDENLY, JOHNNY GUITAR, and a few others).

Wow, intrigued by some of those Sept/Oct releases. Che??? I don't think that was ever released on VHS or DVD. I just remember it being included in the 50 Worst Movies book back in the day, with Jack Palance as Fidel Castro. Should be interesting.

Dogs of War is a must-buy for me. I remember when I was a kid going with my dad to see A View To A Kill, my first Bond movie on the big screen. All my dad could talk about was Christopher Walken as the bad guy and basically forced me to watch Dogs of War afterwards. I thought it was a great flick, back before Walken became somewhat of a camp icon that he is these days. Salvador's also a great film too though I don't know if I'd be all that interested in owning it. James Woods is great in it, plus one weird thing that sticks out in my mind is early in the film he gets busted by a ridiculously buff female cop.

Just received my shipping notice for my latest order which includes the Mechanic. Man I am so looking forward to that, it's my absolute favourite Bronson solo vehicle.

I'm torn between my inclination to upgrade my DVD Love and Death copy, and my utter cold feet to commit myself to getting anything from TT if not absolutely essential.
I just sort of assumed there'd always be an MGM around to release it.

It's been released on DVD in the UK. It's an interesting failure - not nearly as bad as its reputation but not as good if it could have been. There was a huge amount of interference from the studio on the film - so much so that it was the only film Richard Fleischer considered walking off.

After viewing the recent BD release of Possession (1981) I have completely fallen for Isabelle Adjani. I see that TT has a film that she acted in some three years prior titled The Driver.

Can anyone give a recommendation for this film? Bruce Dern has always been a favorite of mine as well.

Sounds like a strong purchase for you. This isn't nearly as "extreme" a performance from Adjani, but she has a graceful and mysterious presence. The film is a real 70s gem, one of my favorite releases in the TT catalog.

Play It Again, Sam is a Paramount title. Warner distributes Paramount titles these days, but I don't know how much say they have in deciding what titles get released.
