Having read through the first post I had thought The Blob was the original 50's film rather than the remake.

I'm guessing by the hysteria around here that the 80's version is the one to have.
Can someone explain to a non-fan why this is a must have title?

Is it a question of being "so bad it's good" like Plan 9 From Outer Space or is it genuinely a cracker that no collection should be without?

No offence meant to all the fans out there

The Blob remake is just a cool 80s horror. If you like cool 80s B movie horrors, you'll probably like The Blob remake.

"so bad it's good" would be more the original IMHO...

That depends. Do you love the movie? I do. It's one of my top three Woody Allen movies (right behind Annie Hall and Hannah and Her Three Sisters), so that's why I picked it up. The video quality, while not stunning, is quite good. It's deliberately soft, so it's not the movie to show off your HT setup. The audio is good, too. I believe it's two-channel, but it's crisp and clear and the dialogue and music (so important in Allen's 80's movies) come out well. If you can get past spending $30+ for a barebones blu, it's worth it, IMHO.

If you can handle grain and like the movie or haven't seen but are a Woody Allen fan then get it. Like every other UA/Orion Woody Allen movie there are no real extras on here, just the trailer and an isolated score track.

I'd give the PQ a ***1/2 out of *****.

I actually prefer and watch, the 1958 version, more than the remake. I like the 1988 version, but the 1958 is the one that scared the crap out of me, as a kid. It's also aged quite well, not so the 1988 version. The visual effects in the 80s version are awesome. But the 50s version's effects are still pretty good as well.

No way! The original is a bonafide genre classic. The 80s remake is fun for what it is, but there's a reason it isn't held in the same regard as the original. If you're only used to watching modern movies the remake might be more appealing, but there's really no comparison to be made.

The 1980s are seen as a second golden age for horror and there are a lot of people who were kids and teens who saw these films in mall movie theatres or rented them on VHS constantly. I'm not even a "horror" guy yet I have a soft spot for so many 80s horror films for this very reason. It's this rabid fan base that made Fright Night and Christine the two most popular TT titles released to date, and the same ones who will be all over The Blob. I wouldn't say that The Blob is a title no collection should be without, but it's a must-have title for many of those horror fanatics.

You hit the nail on the head, I was a kid thru the 60/70's and to me lots of the 60/70's films have a similar attraction so I do understand the need for some to own this

I think it's great that TT have increased the limited run to cater for this demand.

I really wanted Christine as I already loved the book & fortunately I've got a second chance for this & preordered from Italy

Thanks for all your replies and I'll pass on this release. I've got my eye on 3-4 titles in the November releases and now I don't feel the urge to add this one.
Good luck to all next month

Sadly, serious drama does not sell as quickly or as well as genre/action titles.

I heard one user compare it to Planet Terror in its over the top cheesiness. I remember seeing it on TV a long time ago and enjoying it. The real reason I want this film is because I just want another TT horror film in my collection to go with NOTLD90. I love Sony's transfers for TT released films besides the film I just mentioned. Also this one will probably sell out fast so if you don't like the movie and it sells out you can probably make a 100% profit from it.

I have also read online multiple people saying this is a rare occasion where this remake is actually better than the original film. However they both have a similar IMDB rating in the low 6's. Also I kind of want this movie as a companion piece to The Thing and The Fly. 80's remakes of old horror films.

I like both versions of The Blob, the 1958 one with it's invader from space shades of the red menace, and the post-watergate government paranoia version from 1988 where the hero sports a mullet.

If you can only get one, definitely get the original. It's a genre classic and is definitely much better than anything labeled "so bad, it's good." Let's put it another way--The Criterion Collection isn't in the habit of putting out bad movies.

There are a certainly a few questionable movies put out by Criterion, though the only one I would say is outright "bad" is Armageddon.

I don't dislike either version of The Blob, but I also don't much like either version. I can't quite understand the mania that's been generated by TT's announcement of the 80s version, but I suppose it's just a matter of taste. Most of TT's quick sell-outs are the ones at the top of my TT "don't really care about having these in my collection" list.

I don't understand why TT has not included subtitles for their UK movies. This seems really stupid. The 2 Ken Loach films are almost impossible to understand the dialect of the actors in each movie.

I don't know that it's a definitive version as opposed to the original. It's just a rather unique, distinct film... Sort of like the 80s The Fly vs. the original. Different tone and everything. Obviously both are about killer red blobs, and both have key moments in common and there are references to the original, but it's almost less of a remake than just a new (for its time) horror movie about a killer blob. It might have been better served being called "The Slime" or something, since I think everybody expected this to be terrible when it first came out. But then again, those low expectations may've helped the film in the end. I don't think it's as good as Cronenberg's The Fly, after all; but it is a solid 80s horror movie that I can totally see people wanting to own on its own merits.
And it's definitely competent and effective, not a "laugh at how bat it is" film.
