I have to say, I was also disappointed with Bite the Bullet. I felt the competition / camaraderie dynamic was a little too forced, but that wasn't all bad. What really disappointed me was how weak a character Candice Bergen's turned out to be after being set up with a huge potential (she's the only woman in the race, she's hugely independent, she has a past with the bordello owner, etc).

Hey gents ,

Not sure if this has been reported before...In Like Flint freezes a couple of times and then it has advanced 20 seconds into the movie once it resumes. Anyone noticed something similar?

I haven't watched my copy in a year, but it did not freeze or skip at all.

Granted she wasn't the greatest actress but I thought she was okay in this movie.

I'll give a big second to that oildude. Cross of Iron has been high on my list for years. James Coburn (we could do a thread on the most dramatic voice in cinematic history!) and Maximilian Schell are an unbeatable combination.
I have the French import - great film.

I will try it in my other players...it keeps doing it in the same two spots. Hopefully, it is just a quirk with this particular player .

I watched Zardoz yesterday and my mind is blown.

It looked fantastic. I had heard some complaints about graininess elsewhere. Nothing really jumped out at me, but that is possible because this was a relatively low budget picture albeit one with high ambitions. It was interesting to watch the trailer after seeing the movie to get an idea how the regular transfer looks, and there's no comparison. The effects are hokey, but the 4k resolution actually makes them look pretty well done -- especially the floating head sequences.

There are two commentaries on the disc. After watching, I immediately started watching the Boorman commentary and am about halfway through. He reveals some interesting tidbits (like Connery scrapped the driver from his contract, drove himself and split the difference with the film's budget). He throws in some insight occasionally, but he's not a chatterbox and sometimes he gets lost watching the movie. Of course, so did I.

There's also a commentary with film historians, which is what I'm really looking forward to although I'll wait awhile.

As for the film, of course it is off the wall and easy to make fun of. It is difficult to understand and sometimes nonsensical, but I did pick up on some art history and literary motifs that prompted my noodle to start churning. It would take at least one re-watch, and possibly several to try to theorize intelligently, which I'm not up for now, but I admired the film more just knowing that depth exists.

7/10

How long does Screen Archives take to ship items? I placed an order for several of the April 16th titles + The Bounty when they were first available for pre-order, but have not received a shipping email yet. Rather jealous to hear of people watching their discs already.

I was just about to ask the same thing. I ordered three of this months titles and haven't gotten a shipping notice either. Maybe SAE is just overloaded. I too am jealous of people already having watched Zardoz and Adele H.

My experience is usually that they ship the week of the release. This month has been erratic because we're on the tail of the birthday sale. They'll probably be back to normal next month.

I usually get them the week after the release week, but they are always packaged well and in pristine condition.

Boorman talks about the restoration and the problems with the film's negative here:

Yes, my brother has only asked me to watch out for a small handful of titles on blu-ray, and Cross of Iron is one of them. I haven't seen it, but am looking forward to watching it with him if and when it's released.

Just to be sure that the other order is not mine, the five movies weren't "Richard III", "Hard Times", "Philadelphia", "Sexy Beast" and "The Vanishing", were they?

Cool. Thank you. Of course, I should have known that already before I even posted that last question, given that both my orders are still pending, but I get a little paranoid when it comes to USPS. My local post office is the worst.

Thanks again.

Have you sent them an e-mail yet? I'm guessing they would like to know and I bet you get a nice gift from them (possibly a free title) for doing the right thing and forwarding to the correct owner. Not to mention the eternal gratitude of whoever placed the order.

DP/30 Sneak Peek; John Boorman on ZARDOZ - YouTube

Unsworth has been called a "painter with light." His use of smoke and diffusion was picked up by Ridley Scott, I think, who used to burn incense or something on set to get a certain look. You can see it in The Duellists, Alien, particularly in Blade Runner and Legend.

His work on Superman The Movie is part of what makes that film a classic for me. Another DP would've made it too crisp, and the suspension of disbelief would evaporate.

Just watch Murder on the Orient Express to see his mastery in full force. Now THAT'S a film that deserves a 4k restoration and top shelf release on BD. Please!!!

Damn, I decided against getting Royal Flash during the sale, didn't realize he'd done DP on that.

I haven't watched my copy in a few months either, but I had not noticed any playback issues.

This was a blind buy for me and I thought it was modestly funny the first time I watched it, but it's grown on me and now I like enough that mention of it makes me want to pop it in and watch it again.
