Nick Redman was involved in the original reconstruction/restoration of Major Dundee for DVD Novocento. Specifically, he was a participant in the Commentary track, which almost guarantees this feature will be retained for TT's Blu-ray edition.

The last I heard about the delay of TT's Blu-ray was something about the master requiring additional work, so they chose to wait until that was complete before going out with it. I will be very surprised though if Major Dundee is not among TT's year end releases.

Major Dundee would be a day one purchase. I hope it happens this year.

The studio gave Major Dundee a lot of love on DVD, so why they are farming the BD out is baffling. Also the DVD was loaded with features, most of which I fear we will lose on the TT release. Would love to be proven wrong though.

For anyone interested, TCM is going to be showing Pal Joey on Wednesday 8pm ET

I've been on the fence about picking it up since i've never seen it so it'll be a good chance to see if I like it enough to own

I'm excited to finally see The Sound and the Fury, so I guess I'll be buying this one. I'm a big Faulkner admirer, and this film is (in)famous, and has been very difficult to see. The Alex North score in lossless will be a nice bonus, and there's no other extras to be missed this time.

he he , that's the best thing for TT, that there were no previous extra features on the LD or DVD releases.

Yup, that DVD had some really nice features on it. Let's hope they can bring as much of it over as possible. I hope Nick Redman holds his own copyright for the commentary at least.

In the case of The Sound and the Fury, there wasn't even a DVD, LD or VHS release, barebones or otherwise. This is the film's premiere on video format, though it has been shown on Turner Classic Movies in the USA.

A title many mentioned as a possible TT choice--The Rains of Ranchipur-- is being released by Fox in Germany in October.

Just got a sneak peek at Sound and the Fury and Steel Magnolias. The former looks very good - it was not an eye-popping colorfest ever but the color looks like its always looked - subdued, but with accurate colors.

Steel Magnolias looks exactly like it should look, a wonderfully accurate transfer of a late 80s film. I actually don't care for the film at all, but it looks very good.

From what materials Arkadin? Yet another total crapshoot?

Seriously, after that iffy Scandahoovian release of The Egyptian...that 'brownout' version of Dr. Dolittle from Germany...and even Eureka's gnarly release of Prince Valiant from the U.K., I don't trust that these overseas divisions have access to the home studio's best surviving material for this stuff. When I hear one of these overseas 'Scope announcements now, I actually "pre-cringe", but try to hold onto the feint hope that at least this might mean renewed interest in these titles stateside.

So I want to believe this announcement means something, but my first instinct is yet another

Well these companies license from Fox, so I suppose they use what Fox gives them, just like Twilight Time does, & not every Twilight Time Fox release is that great looking. For The Egyptian, Fox had two HD masters & TT was able to use the newer one, it looks like the older one was used for the Spanish DVD & the Scandahoovian Blu, but if TT released Prince Valiant, I'm sure it would come from the same master, only be a lot more expensive. I have the Spanish DVD of The Rains Of Ranchipur & it looks stunning, obviously a down-convert from an HD master & if they use that same master for this Blu-ray, then it will be worth having...& a lot cheaper than TT.

But wasn't that 'brownout' German version of Dr. Dolittle from Fox too Arkadin...despite an 8k Fotokem scan from the Todd-AO OCN sitting in the hopper at home?

My point was, these overseas divisions operate more autonomously, frequently using their own vault materials instead of the parent co's. It's no guarantee you're getting the best that exist. TT does that.

Twilight Time haven't - and wouldn't - release any Fox 'Scope title as butt-ugly as Eureka's Prince Valiant. Even TT's 'iffiest' title to date, Demetrius and the Gladiators, was a jewel compared to that Blu-ray...and Prince Valiant was hardly a bargain bin purchase. Even from ImportCDs, it set me back over $25 bucks!

And before anyone jumps on that thinking I'm randomly bashing Eureka, I happen to like most of the work I've seen from them with other vintage titles such as The Black Shield of Falworth, and especially Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves and Paranoiac. As I've said almost from the get-go, I'm in this for the quality, price is secondary. Overseas labels don't get a free pass on that point either. All I ask is that they deliver a product worth the premium hit when I hit 'Play'.

Well, not a "lot cheaper" CinemaScope, about $5 bucks (see above). And that's with no 50GB disc, no special features, no isolated score, and no Julie Kirgo-class liner notes.

In any case, it is very good news that quality elements still exist for The Rains of Ranchipur. That was one Fox 'Scope title I feared had badly deteriorated. Yet with a Bernard Herrmann score, I would still prefer a TT edition, if only to hear that baby isolated. We might get that someday. Maybe not. I have no crystal ball. At least it's good news that such an edition is possible.

no--Dr. Doolittle was not a true Fox release.
it was Koch I believe.
Now, of course, the elements were provided from Fox, but it wasn't an actual Fox bd.
I am hopeful that Fox will release a good Dr. Doolittle at some point in the US, but who knows what will happen.
TT for that one perhaps??

I take your point (& your warning!) about Prince Valiant, but it would only cost me £10 from Amazon & have seen it for sale for as little as £6 (but I'm in the UK). Twilight Time (with p&p) = about 30 euros, so the German Blu would be a bit cheaper (& I'd wait 'till the price came doen a bit). I love the score of The Rains Of Ranchupir (by Hugo Friedhofer), I have the Varese CD, but only 15 minutes of it survives. I'm hoping they've found more (as they found all that extra Bernard Herrmann stuff). I don't buy any of these releases without reading lots of reviews first.

Friedhofer not Herrmann! I have The Rains of Ranchipur confused with King of the Khyber Rifles.

D'oh...

I am so sick of coming into this thread to see what new TT information there might be, and every other post being the same useless hyperbole about how TT walks on water.

TT is another company that provides a small, if overpriced, stream of catalogue titles.

TT is nothing special. TT is nothing special. TT is nothing special.

Now, it is time to go water my ignore list.
