Twilight Time DVD Label For the Rock ‘n’ Roller in you: the groundbreaking British musical extravaganza hits Blu-Ray for the very first time!

ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

Director Julien Temple’s free-form rock musical adaptation of Colin MacInnes’ cult-fave book about life in late-Fifties London, Absolute Beginners (1986) offers music and performance by the likes of David Bowie, Sade, Ray Davies, The Style Council, and Gil Evans. Focusing on the British music scene on the cusp of the 1960s, the film features a breakout performance from Patsy Kensit and a fabulously stylized visual élan.
I had never heard of Absolute Beginners until announced for June by TT. After reading about it and seeing this post from TT on their Facebook page, I am interested. A rock musical starring David Bowie and including in the cast Ray Davies and Sade Adu in her acting debut. Being a fan of Bowie and especially The Kinks, this Blu-ray is now a "must-have" for me. Seeing Sade in a film will be cool; I have most of her CDs and when I am in the mood will slide one in my player to chill to the jazzy sounds of her silky voice. Gil Evans is somewhat familiar to me from his time playing with Miles Davis.

I suspect the isolated score will be a large part of the attraction on this one. In the late 2000s, I was transferred to the Los Angeles area for three years with my job and while there went through a renaissance of musical discovery listening to KCRW every day. Among my new finds was the soulful "Modfather" UK musician Paul Weller. I now have all his solo releases (and like them all....my favorite albums from him are the fantastically groovy Heavy Soul, melodic Wild Wood, and the psychedelic punk-soul hybrid Sonik Kicks). I also have his earlier CDs from his time with The Jam, but have only just begun to delve into his post-Jam band The Style Council, so having them on this soundtrack is a treat for me.

From what I have read Absolute Beginners on initial release was not successful but later developed a cult following. One of the criticisms I read was the distinctive music did not match the film's setting in the late 1950s. However, the soundtrack and the musicians starring in the film are a large part of its continued appeal.

Perhaps someone who has seen it can comment on it. I am looking forward to this one.

EDIT: the movie also stars actor James Fox, a mid-1960s staple in such films as Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (now OOP from TT), King Rat, and Thoroughly Modern Millie, the latter with Julie Andrews. I would love to see King Rat and TMM get released on Blu-ray.

Nice. I only paid $38 for the 100 that I bought however. Good enough for me.

I remember the release of Absolute Beginners back in the 1980s, because David Bowie's title song played on the radio quite frequently for a while. I never did see the movie, though, so I'm eagerly awaiting the Twilight Time Blu-ray.

Fans of film noir will appreciate Bowie's music video for the title song...

Rewatching my American Buffalo DVD right now, and I believe I just saved another $34.30. My Oppo 103 has it looking great.

Another great David Mamet script. Highly recommended for those lacking it in their collection.

I love when this happens : Per my Amazon records, my DVD cost me $.84 in 2008 !

I wasn't worried about them being shipped as I've been following the thread and the delays forced by the birthday sale. Well, I was perhaps starting to get a little concerned about getting my free signed Breaking Away..... thought hmmm, maybe by the time my order ships, they will find they can't find my signed copy, that they mis-counted and ran out of their limited supply and I'll get screwed. ha ha
Came home from work to find all my ordered on April 1st TT titles awaiting me on my porch. SAE packs these things so well, so securely. Kudos to them.

And so cool to have Dennis Christopher's autograph on the Breaking Away pamphlet. (To think he touched the pamphlet that I now own and hold..... I feel like Marcia Brady after Davy Jones kissed her cheek. I will never wash my hands again..... Erm.....ummm......gross.)

That stinks. Someone must have bought all the remaining copies... I was watching it, mulling it. It went from 37 copies on the weekend to 33, and sold only one copy one day, then a few more another. Hard to believe the last 20-something copies would sell in a span of a few hours.

Yeah, that does seem fishy, especially as the pre-orders haven't come up yet, as I was thinking would be what finishes it off. Kind of lousy if some scalpers has snapped them all up.

I just received notice that my shipment including the Pamela Franklin signed copy of Prime of Miss Jean Brodie has been sent. I'll still have to wait a good two weeks though for it to wind its way north of the 49th parallel.

Ya, I think it was 22 copies last night. I also think a reseller snatched up the remaining copies because it was moving really slowly prior.

Guys...I'm sorry if you missed out. Really I am. But with all due respect, it's been available for over 2 years & 8 months. It was on sale for $10 off regular price just one month ago during their anniversary sale; and it's been on the very first post of this thread under bright red "LOW QUANTITY ALERT" status with multiple updates as the numbers got smaller for a very long time.

No one to blame but yourselves. There is no way you should have missed out on this if you truly wanted it.

Well, I ordered one a little while back so I didn't miss out. Just observing that they are all now gone, and it does appear that someone came in and bought the last copies. It's just a few of us on here trying to enjoy whatever little is left of the old cart trick.

Ahh...understood. I had heard about the cart trick for some time, but never actually seen it in action until last Wednesday when I ordered my autographed freebie copy of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and then watched the remaining copies slowly disappear.

It is kind of fun isn't it?

ETA: just checked my tracking. It's scheduled to arrive tomorrow along with First Men in the Moon, Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Story of Adele H., and the highly anticipated Zardoz! Should be a fun upcoming weekend of movie watching.

It was addictive. I had a little spreadsheet going, and you could see the hot sellers by how quickly the numbers were decreasing. It was great. Yes, I'm a

But it was probably too much publicly available information about a company's inner dealings. They may say it was a software upgrade, which it might well have been, but I'm sure they feel better about it being gone. Nothing dampens the impulse to buy than seeing that a limited edition item still has 2000+ copies after a year...
