Bye Bye Birdie Blu-ray
While I never put take in screencaps, those look marvelous.

This master must be from Cineric's 4k restoration.

It's mystifying why Sony would decline releasing something as fine as this, and yet go out with a lesser musical like Annie...

I just finished watching Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. Loved it. Great PQ and audio.

Question:

At ~1:26:27, just after the intermission during the party scene the night before the race begins, there is a video glitch where the camera pans slowly across the room and a wooden column in the foreground suddenly breaks into pixels for a second. It is not source related but appears to be a coding error. Anyone else notice this?

Even after 3 viewings* I didn't "notice" this aberration until you mentioned it oildude. But you're right, it is there...for a single frame the foreground column does pixilate, then seems a bit softer than normal in the following frame. What's weird is nothing else in the frame was affected, just that foreground wooden column.

I'm guessing that the reason I never noticed this anomaly was because the natural focus of that long tracking shot was the movie's main characters assembled informally in groups in the background. I mean, with all that was going on there, who was watching the post?

Of course, now I'll always see that infernal glitch...so...uhm...thanks...for...your...uhm...ke en...uhm...observation 'dude.

* Just finished watching it again with Annakin's Commentary, which was very interesting if you've never heard it.

Thanks, Rock, for looking at this.....and for letting me know I don't have a defective disc. Sorry to have pointed out a glitch that you will now see every time . I couldn't help but see it....the column is in the foreground, but even then, I seem to pick up on these things.

One thing I usually never notice is also evident in one scene. It is not a video glitch, but an intrusion of modern (1965) into the movie:
[Show spoiler]during the scene where Terry Thomas's plane is on the train, as he is moving forward toward the engine, there is a nuclear power plant in the background. Good ol' high def sure makes it obvious.

FWIW oildude, I believe you have a 'scoop' here...I haven't heard 'boo' about this single frame glitch in TMMITFM...anywhere!

Again, my focus was on the character and the humorous stunt being performed, which made that anachronism invisible. But I won't be looking for it either, and promise to forget we ever had this conversation the next time I watch this movie.

They do, but they don't even begin to tell the story on this transfer - as I said a month ago, it's simply one of the best Blu-ray transfers ever.

I'm going to pick up Bye Bye Birdie with The Sound and the Fury. Never seen the former, either, but you can't go wrong with Ann Margaret...

It's good, but try to catch your local high school drama club if they perform it--
The movie dropped so much of the original stage musical on an Annie-like level, just to add a dopey movie-subplot....But at least we still get Dick Van Dyke and Paul Lynde from the original Broadway production.

I'm intrigued by the quality review of Bye Bye Birdie, although I have never seen the film.
But I guess I won't buy it since others are priority (Hitchcock box, Monroe box, Jaws, indiana Jones box, E.T.)

The others you have listed will be available for a long time, and eventually at lower prices. If I were you and wanted BBB, I would get it now.

I have the the frame freeze-framed on my plasma right now and it's the entire frame that goes all blocky, not just the column area. It probably is a coding glitch or something, but it's just a fraction of a second, so it really doesn't bother me.

That's even weirder Rory. On my PS3, pretty much just the column breaks up.

Like I said, without oildude's tip, I doubt I would have ever noticed this 'blink and you'll miss it' aberration...the image is just so strong and stable throughout.

Although it violates my constitution to never pay more than $20 for a single movie, as a birthday present to myself I placed an order for 'As Good As It Gets' and 'Bye Bye Birdie'. $65 and change delivered. OUCH!

Twilight Time can thank Blu-ray.com for this purchase. If I hadn't read the glowing review of Bye Bye Birdie last night, I probably wouldn't have pulled the trigger. I was in a moment of weakness, probably due to carb/popcorn overload from watching 'The Artist' for the fourth time!

My order arrived today with Bye Bye Birdie and High Time. Sad to say that the latter's booklet is folded - not quite creased - but definitely noticeable. First time this has happened. Oh well...

FYI: I just received the following e-mail from Screen Archives:

Quote:

Your exclusive one time use coupon code is: wish081912

Enter this code on the final checkout page to receive your discount. Code is valid for 1 time use only! Hurry, this offer expires Sunday at midnight 12PM EST on August 19, 2012!

Thanks for visiting ScreenArchives.com and we hope to see you again soon!

I considered holding off until TT's September pre-orders go up on the 17th, but since I already had enough stuff sitting in my cart, I decided to jump today anyway. The code worked.

Not a huge discount, but 10% is 10%. So if you have some TT titles you've been waffling over, this might be a good time to jump...
