Yeah I wonder what the issue is. It does seem like a handshaking type problem. So I do have to have the player on SDR2020 to make it work. Hmm, I guess I'll just need to try again.

That is one thing I find pretty annoying about this gen, is the handshaking issues. I never had a single problem in the 1080p HDMI era.

Your Sony is probably switching to an SDR mode since that is what it is getting from the UB820 in SDR/BT2020 output mode. That is correct, but you need to get the Sony switched to a BT2020 color profile instead of the REC709 that it defaults to.

It would be normal that you can't use HDR options in the Sony when it gets SDR BT2020.

Best Buy was previously sold out in mid-November. I posted here on November 28 that Best Buy was accepting orders again.

Now they are sold out again in just under 2 weeks.

Next time they get stock, don't delay placing an order.

I have a Sony 65X850A from 2014, non HDR 4K LCD TV. Would the 820 give me a worthwhile benefit with its HDR optimizer? It’s a triluminous display, so I assume it supports BT2020.

I have a Sony pj (885) and it works great. Here’s my settings:

Sony: gamma 2.4, bt2020, d65, brightness and contrast set according to masciola disc (50 and max for my setup)

Penny 820: sdr 2020, optimizer on, slider to +1 (personal preference)

Looks better than my custom gamma curves and is set and forget since it maps to the the disc metadata

Yeah, that is what I tried, but my projector player handshaking puts it into that dynamic range conversion mode, so rec709. Mine is a 675/550.

I know for sure that the 'B' 2014 set that I had (55X9005B) could support SDR 2020 from the Panny, but I never heard of any of the 'A' models using it.

I hooked my Panny directly to the tv and now all hdr is down converting to SDR. Disc and apps both downconverting. I've tried everything. The Panny says "dyname range conversion output". Any ideas?

Keep in mind. I have zero issues with feeding the Panny Into the oppo and then directly to the tv.

I am very happy to confirm my MU8000 and Panny are HDR10+ capable. This is A Beautiful Planet FYI released this week and one of the first HDR10+ discs released.

So very ^ cool to see the 1st HDR10+ and nice demonstration!

Love Panasonic's detailed menu display. The UB9000 has even more source and content detailed information screens

Thanks. I am going to try and make comparisons while playing the disc on my Xbox One S. As talked about earlier you cannot optimize it like DV. But for my TV the best way to describe 10+ visually is that it looks like Normal HDR10 content but with the Panny optimizer set all the way up close to light or bright settings but the shadows are handled better(I did this by turning the hdr10+ playback off and playing the same scene with just hdr10 and optimizing it.) I love this player. Perfect also for comparing hdr grades.

If you are using a Sony projector with this player make sure in the advanced menu you have HDR set to AUTO, not ON or OFF. It will then automatically apply the 2020 color mode for the input, but will NOT apply the HDR EOTF (so your contrast slider should NOT say Contrast HDR).

Just curious if that firmware is the same region free firmware that was mentioned earlier? Does it also add the gamma mode adjustment that the 9000 has?

Yes it is, can you be more detailed or specific?..I can adjust the gamma during playback on the 820.

I’d rather not get more specific as some forums don’t like talk of firmware hacks but I wasn’t aware this firmware included the 9000 options. Thank you.

820 and 9000 already support HDR10+ and DV out of the box.
