Hmm the 820 is $100 off most places. Time to upgrade from the Sony X700.

If both your display and player support both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and you play a disc encoded in both formats, why does it play the HDR10+ part?

I think it defaults to that, you have to change the settings with the Panasonic.

But why is it the default? The OPPO models are also like that.

It's just the way they roll, maybe the Panasonic prioritizes HDR10 due to their optimizer, I'm not sure. A toggle on the remote would be handy, but it's simple enough to change.

I’m not talking about the basic HDR10 with static metadata. Rather, HDR10+ with dynamic metadata. When you play a Dolby Vision disc, it plays in Dolby Vision, but HDR10+/Dolby Vision dual format discs play as HDR10+.

Like I said, I'm not sure why it defaults to one over the other. Dolby Vision does disable the picture settings, so that maybe the reason it takes precedence, but it's straightforward to disable.

Assuming you've selected both HDR10+ as well as DV in the player's set up menu, make sure the Contents Type Flag is on Auto and don't have the HDR TV Type set to High. As long as the HDMI input on the display is DV enabled, you should get DV automatically. Try those things anyway. That's how we have the settings in our store on the Panasonic and Sony panels and DV is working fine.

I honestly don't know, but maybe because it was added at a later date through an update? or it affects picture options like it does with the Panasonic?

Sony TVs don't do 10+ so that'd be why the DV is coming through on a DV/10+ disc. As for the Panasonic, I can only quote the 820's manual which states that, all being equal, 10+ will override DV if both are present in the content and both are supported by the TV:

Had my first freeze with the 9000 tonight with Jaws at around the 43 minute mark. Has there been any reports about Jaws having problems in DV or is it likely a dirty disc or a lemon. I gave the disc a good clean so I will try it both in the 9000 again and also my LG tomorrow.

I THINK I might finally jump from my LG B6 to a Sony A8H tomorrow with these insane prices.

I'm sure it's been covered pages ago, but recommended settings for the A8H and the 820 work best together?

Thanks.

On the A8H, start with the default "Custom" picture mode for SDR and HDR. With DV content, use the "Dark" setting.

On the Panasonic, you can basically leave everything on Auto/default, although I recently changed the YCbCr output to 4:2:2. Make sure you set your TV type to OLED. Once you start a movie, open the Options video setting and switch to Set 1 so you can enable HDR Optimizer.

I watched Reqiuem for a Dream today on the UB820 with DV on and to my surprise there were no issues with playback. Seeing that Knives Out, Midway, and Ghost in the Shell (animated) all seem to have issues with this player when DV is on I thought this disc would also be affected seeing as it is a lionsgate release. I'm happy to report there are no issues with this disc on this player

I'm curious to know what makes this disc different than the other three that lionsgate has released.

So I'm reading up on forums and reviews on my next UHD Player. UB820 is one I'm considering. Are there any major issues? Complaints? The Sony's for example I keep reading people complaining about freezes and lockups during disk play back. Or even streaming. I'm not so concerned about streaming as I use my PC or Apple TV 4k for Streaming.

I have another question regarding these two 4K Blu-ray players. I read in another thread that the Panasonic UB820/UB9000 have issues with playing certain Dolby Vision discs that it would freeze in certain parts of a movie when playing the Dolby Vision enhancement layer but wouldn't freeze when playing the HDR10 base layer. Has anyone experience this when playing Dolby Vision discs on these players, even with their latest firmware updates? And has this issue also occurred on cheaper Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players?
