It looks like global dimming.

Like I said upthread, it seems to brighten dark moments and dim bright ones. I haven’t been too pleased with how it affected highlights in dark scenes, they look like they’ve been composited in.

Isn’t the Dolby Vision presentation not going to look exactly like the HDR one anyway, because the DV layer has dynamic metadata? Several titles I have like The Shining and Us are significantly brighter in DV (on ‘Cinema’) than the HDR10, Dynamic Contrast (active HDR) on or off.
From the looks of it, you have a B7. LG's "Active HDR" or "Dynamic Tone Mapping" at that time when the B7 was new wasn't that great. In fact, as someone has said earlier, it was very aggressive when it was tone mapping the image. Now when we got to the next year and the following year (the 8 and 9 Series), the Dynamic Tone Mapping had its own menu and the algorithm has improved each year. This is why I'm getting better results out of it than you because the Dynamic Tone Mapping Algorithm has been improved in the 9 series than in the 7 Series.

Cinema is the correct one. But I can't say for you since yours got re-calibrated from what I understand. Cinema Home follows a higher/brighter curve for tonemapping so I understand now why DTM Off in HDR10 looks dimmer to you. Dolby Vision Cinema Home = HDR10 Cinema with DTM On.

I was contemplating using Cinema Home and DTM On for a while but finally settled on Cinema with DTM Off. Instead opting for Peak Brightness on Low for both modes. I watch movies in a completely dark room.

do you guys mess around with the internal BD/UHD settings on this? Specifically the Luminance and Noise Reduction settings. I'm curious if there is a combination of settings that could make the picture even better? Or is this pretty dependent tv to tv?

Yeah, from what the calibration setting results say, both Cinema and Cinema Home have the exact same adjustments made to them. But I can tell the files that were used to calibrate the 2 modes are slightly different. Cinema Home Has Just a slightly higher peak brightness than Cinema. But literally like 1 nit difference. I'll have to check to see which one I am using and get back to you.

But you have a point. A calibrated TV will have completely different results than one that is not. People also have personal preferences as to what truly looks best to them and what doesn't. And that is the most important thing here. The only reason why I'm recommending some of these settings are for people to spring board on them to see if it works out for them. Allows them to experiment just like I did and find the settings that works best for them. Plus, I love helping people out and that's what this site is for. I can't tell you how much I have learned and still is learning about 4K, blu-ray, and anything and everything Cinema. I love it!

[Show spoiler]
Robert, any way to inquire if there's a new firmware in the pipes that will address and fix the issues this player is having?

Version 1.66 is not for the USA and does not address any of the issues we want.

New machines in the US are sold with 1.66 and older ones with 1.64 (plenty on the AVSForum reporting it - was how the existence of 1.64 and 66 was discovered), so on that basis I'd say it is. It doesn'te explain why the latest auto update is 1.60.

I did find the Panasonic Asia manual download for it and installed it - and although it doesn't fix the Lionsgate issue, it does seem to have fixed the audio drop outs I used to get. I'd often have, after pausing or fast forwarding loss of audio requiring me to toggle audio tracks to get sound back. Since I installed 1.66 it hasn't happened once.

The 120hz panel and higher tier chip would clean up the 3:2 judder and processing stutter.

If you want to stay with the Samsung family, look at the Q80 or Q90 depending on your budget. Or we could make other suggestions but need to know size and budget
Thanks. I've recommended the 2020 Sammy Q70s to James. Unlike Q60s, they have 120Hz refresh and the 55" is just below and the 65" just above his budget.

I opened my replacement LOTR copy last tonight. Right off the bat the first four discs were loose and rattling around. *sigh* Not a good start. Fortunately, when I put in the Fellowship EE disc it worked.

Is it possible to make this one region free?
I have an Oppo 203, but sooner or later it will run into problems.

Question guys. I'm close to buying the ub820. I read that it has twin HDMI output jacks (one for video and one for audio). What does this mean? I have a Sony str dn 1080 receiver and assume one HDMI Will go from The ub820 to the receiver and obviously another one from The receiver to the OLED tv. So why the twin hdmi's on the ub820? What's the practical use for that? Thanks.

This helps for people with older receivers without 4K/HDR/DV passthrough. Video HDMI goes to TV/Projector and Audio HDMI goes to receiver.
