Has anyone experience this when playing Dolby Vision discs on these players, even with their latest firmware updates? And has this issue also occurred on cheaper Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players?
It has happened to me with Midway and Knives Out, repeatable at the same timestamp. I have not tried them since the firmware update though.

I have not had any other issues with any other movie.

Can’t speak to the 9000 but no freeze on the 820.

It was weird, the disc played fine on my LGUBK90 but froze at same point on the Panny with and without DV. Had Amazon send a replacement disc which worked perfectly on the 9000.

I posted this in the Harry Potter 4K thread, but I figured I would post it here since it's relevant to the 820:

I started testing things out again. This time with different scenes. In Order of the Phoenix, I noticed that when Dumbledore and Voldemort were fighting, their spells when having both DTM On and the Optimizer On looked not as good compared to just having the DTM On. However, going to Deathly Hallows Part 2 when Harry is in "limbo" talking to Dumbledore, having just the DTM On made the movie look to bland in color but with both the DTM and Optimizer on, it made it look just right.

My setting on my Panasonic 820 player was on the OLED setting, which allows the player to tone map anything above 1,000 nits. What I have discovered is that the TV's DTM on the LG C9 actually does a great job with movies that have a HDR grade 1,500 nits and below. However, once it hits about 1,500-2,000 nits, the TV cannot tone map it correctly. Order of the Phoenix has a Max at about 1,200 nits while Deathly Hallows Part 2 has a Max of well over 2,000 nits.

I finally did mess with the 820's Optimizer settings and have found that for the LG C9, the best setting should be on the Super High Luminance Setting (1,500 nits) with the LG C9's DTM function set to "On". The reason how I came to this conclusion is the C9's DTM function does a better job tone mapping a movie that is HDR graded up to about 1,500 nits or slightly above than the player. After that though, the TV doesn't do so good so the player has to take over tone mapping any movie that is graded above 1,500 nits. This leads me to believe that the Optimizer needs to be updated so that we can set the Optimizer at specific nit settings to properly tone map movies according to our TV's limits. Something I believe Geoff has mentioned a few times. Something for Panasonic to think about in the future.

Yeah, it wouldn't have to be the most granular control, like down to single nit levels, but being able to adjust it in 100-nit increments would be aces.

And used 32 bit upsampled processing so the optimizer would not have added banding to the image.

Pro Tools even has such a setting, so that you have ample headroom to apply plenty of special sauce to the audio waveform without futzing with the quality of the source data.

Exactly! If this was possible, I could pinpoint almost exactly where my C9 can and cannot process the HDR grading. I'm actually noticing (thanks to the Ghost Scene in HP 4) that the C9 can tone map even further than 1,500 nits. Just sucks that we are limited to leaving it at 1,500 nits.

Maybe someday, Panasonic will make a player that will allow increment setting rather than just a few presets.

I have this sinking feeling that we won't be seeing any more new 4k player models from anyone and those that are out will not have new production replenishment. Once they're gone, they're gone.

There are some worrying signs re: certain manufacturers, I agree, but UHD players just going away completely? Already? I can't see that. I feel like, even if Panasonic, Sony (well, aside from the PS5), Pioneer, etc. were to drop out, some other company would step in to fill the void.

It would have been some company like Oppo, but then they amscrayed out of the consumer electronics business except for mostly smartphones.

If that starts to happen, forget hoarding toilet paper; time to fill up the closet with UHD BD players.

I share the concern. Wondering whether you communicate with a salesman who's candid with you about such things or what other source(s) you rely on to gauge what's going on in terms of the UHD BD hardware situation. I keep an eye on Amazon and was concerned when all the UHD BD players went unavailable a few months ago . . . but then a few weeks later they were back.

I better contact Panasonic about a warranty replacement Monday then. Mines busted. Won't read any discs. I did a factory reset, and still nothing.

The fact that there were no new 4k player models mentioned at any electronics trade shows this year (even the virtual ones) that I am aware of is a big, flashing red light.

Right, FF, but do you/we have anything more affirmative to go on than our speculations about what didn't happen eight months ago? What do you think of the idea that I've seen mentioned in these pages that the CE manufs may just shift to a two-year (instead of annual) product model announcement cycle?

Nothing was announced at CEDIA virtual 2020 that I am aware of. That's a pretty bad omen.

What would they announce though? There's already players across all budgets providing all the features we need. Then there's PS5 and Xbox Series X coming too.

What would a new player offer?

Better build quality and a more solid optical drive mechanism if some brave company decided to have a model to compete with the Panny 9000. Even that isn't exactly a tank. The definition of high quality is really getting lowered.

Manufacturers stopped releasing new BD player models years ago. The ones you see in the shelves today at Best Buy, Wal-mart, Target etc. were the last models they released i.e the Sony S6700/S3700 which were originally released around 2015/2016. IMO we're heading this way with 4K players. The latest models will probably be it for the foreseeable future. Nothing wrong with that IMO. The current players are still awesome.
