Turning up white tone curve will lower the peak brightness. It can help if you have blown out highlights.

Yes thank you, but I meant the slider called BRIGHTNESS, which curiously is rarely mentioned at all.

I would assume it's similar to the brightness on your tv/projector. I rather adjust that in the tv/projector.

My projector has the same standard settings (brightness, contrast, color, sharpness, etc..) in both SDR and HDR modes, but I've always preferred not to touch them while in HDR mode, because supposedly experts say moving any of them may alter the EOTF calibration, but I don't know if that applies to projectors too. That's why I've always liked the panny HDR settings. But maybe I may have to start thinking about it.. any thoughts?
Thanks again

Hi, Have had my ub820 7 months is just stared with the following fault any body experienced this?

On powering up it doesn’t proceed beyond the “WELCOME” message,
it requires me to Hold down the power button for several seconds to power it down, then repress the power button the player then boots correctly to the home screen (as directed f99 fault in the instruction book)

Any adjustment to brighten or darken will change the eotf. The tone curves changes the higher or lower end of the eotf.

There is no Magnolia warranty swap, and that other person must have had a Geek Squad warranty. That's the only time they'll do it in-store.

The most Best Buy could do for me is ship it to Panasonic, and I'd be looking at 4-6 week turnaround. Not happy with Best Buy Geek Squad chat at all.

I will update with info on my inevitable Panasonic experience, unless this is considered off-topic?
I would assume your Panasonic dealings should be fine. Honestly, maybe better than Best Buy's.

After reading this I just added a 2 year Geek Squad plan since there was still some time to do it. The standard warranty is parts one year labor 90 days.

Oh so you saying a click or two in either direction isn’t going to ruin the HDR effect or anything, right?

Hi again guys, having the Panny too, and I wanted to try the HDR - SDR conversion too on my BenQ W1720, but I cannot access to the “BT2020 color space“ without a HDR signal. Given my projector is native Rec709 should I try the HDR - SDR709 conversion then? Would this benefit my images same way as with SDR2020 such as a more proper tone mapping? I’ve been using the player outputting HDR2020 and still looks great but I’ve been battling this in the back of my head too since again, my projector is really native 709 and I don’t know if I can achieve great quality with just SDR 709

EDIT: Ok so I just tried it, HDR to SDR709 again in a long time and did something I didnt do before: use the HDR sliders hehe.. and I amazed ho good it looks... I moved the dynamic range slider up to +8 and it seems to be the best balance. Now apparently my smart eco lamp mode doesn’t go nuts with the brightness levels anymore. So, just to confirm, the panny 820 is doing the tone mapping itself isn’t it? Also this whole process with SDR709 does not affect the original’s source 4K resolution, right?? The playback info says is 4K but I dont now if there’s some downconversion and then upconversion process because of the 4K output. Meanwhile, wow, is the panny player suppose to be this good with HDR-SDR709 conversion too? I think I should keep toying wit the sliders but so far so good.

Hi just started watching netflix on the panasonic, occasionally I see a little judder, just depending on the scenes, panning scenes usually end up with one and I see in character movement too. I am watching some animated moves so maybe it is more obvious.

I am not sure if this is because because 24P contents is forced to 60hz or there is a problem like lag or something, I think also happens with Amazon streaming.

I am kind of annoyed by streaming right now due to stuff like this., netflix quality is pretty terrible, while amazon's movies can sometimes fool me thinking it is same as the blu ray.

I am using a DLP projector which does 24P I am not sure about it's 60hz performance.

I've seen a lot of complaints in relation to all Panasonic blu-ray players that the Netflix playback is pretty poor. Never had the need to test it myself.

The in-built app functionality of the Panasonic is pretty poor. You might want to try a Firestick 4k and see if it's any better for a slightly cheaper alternative. They are occasionally on sale.

That seems nice, but overkill to just watch netflix and amazon stream. I will checkout black friday for deals on Nvidia or Roku Ultra.

I actually liked the looks of the UB900 over the 9000. I wished I hadn't got rid of it (Dolby Vision isn't the be all/end all, and the default to HDR 10 is A-OK with me!).

Also the 900 never gave me the "High Clarity Sound" glitch as the 9000 does. I never use it, and it always alerts me is in effect when I power the unit on. Very annoying.

I looked at the Panasonic cause it was recommended but I found the streaming side well 60hz default was not an option.

I can't speak for Roku as I never had one but I do like the shield for streaming netflix and other streaming services since it has the refresh rate app. The only one who does not properly support it is amazon. It throws an HDMI error when trying to change it. I got a fire cube for the Amazon only for the variable refresh rate.

The new Roku ultra I heard does come with Dolby Vision and the only upside for the Nvidia Shield is the lossless codecs it can do for Plex which no other streaming device supports (Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD MA)

I much prefer the UB9000 over the 900 (which I also had), not even close in terms of build quality although I think it still looks good visually. In fact, I picked the 9000 over the 820 (which looked exactly like the 900 lol) only because of the build quality even though I don't use the extra audio features

Either way I have too many Dolby Vision titles and constant itch for new gear
