You're probably right. And if that's the case, the only way a "newer" version of the Optimizer would be available would be in a new player, which from what it sounds like Panasonic is not wanting to do right now.

Like I said though, I'm happy with what we have in the Optimizer and as you mentioned, we hope Panasonic will fix some of the issues that have been plaguing the player for the past year in a half or so!

I can't wait! I was already blown away by the difference in the Shining 4K disc vs the regular Blu-ray, I'm planning for that to be one of my demo discs along with the new Second Sight Dawn of the Dead 4K set once it arrives.

Are there any specific settings I should be using if I'm planning to run the 820 directly into a JBL Bar 9.1 soundbar? If there's a resource somewhere in this thread, just point me in that direction.

As a starting point, literally everything on "Auto" is the best to get you going. From there, depending on your TV you will need to set your display type so the HDR Optimizer knows what target to hit for tonemapping HDR10 content before handing off to your TV. You will have to manually enable this once starting a movie. Note that it gets bypassed with DV content.

How do you safely eject a USB from the 820?

Just got back from Best Buy with mine. It was a hassle trying to get a refund for my LG player through the Geek Squad warranty. Something about me getting a price adjustment on my LG player two years ago through the call center “broke the link” to the store. So they couldn’t just refund me. They tried saying they’d have to send it out for service, but I kindly asked for a refund so I didn’t have to wait (up to) four weeks just to mostly likely get a refund anyways. The guy did some trick and manually gave me the money back on a gift card.

Was able to pick this up with tax and a four year warranty for $280 out the door.

Ok guys. Just ordered this, probably going to return my x800m2. But I have until January to do that. Will have both players hooked up to my Sony A8H to compare.

My brand new x800m2 player froze on the 2nd movie I have ever watched on it, 1917...

UB820 or 9000? $350 is easier to swallow than $900 on sale, but will I regret cheaping out?

From what I've read, and reviews I've watched, The main difference is the build quality. It's more of a high end product for enthusiasts, if you're looking for the best player for the money, the 9000 is not really worth the extra money.

I have bought both and the creaky plastic of the UB820 is what drove me to spend an extra $500 for the upgrade. I don't regret it. Sitting down and watching the movie virtually no difference. I also use the balanced stereo out to listen to CDs sometimes. It has a dedicated DAC section with a fairly new AKM DAC chipset that I don't think the UB820 has.

I finally joined the club!!! Of course, it put a little dent in my OLED savings fund, but I couldn't let the lowest price I think I've ever seen it go by without grabbing one.

Sooooo question for the long-time users and pros (GeoffD I'm calling your name!) - It's currently connected to the dearly departed plasma Panasonic Viera TC-P65ST50 professionally calibrated. This TV still looks so good, I haven't been able to bring myself to replace it until I can afford a 77" Sony or LG OLED. Anyway, I did a few demos and it appears I can watch 4K discs without losing any brightness (a demo my Xbox One X failed at) but I don't really know what settings to put it at. Right now, I have DV turned off, HDR10+ turned off, have it on SDR/Rec.720 color.

I'm hoping to upgrade early next year, but until then I'll be using this for BD discs and would love to be able to view the 4K discs in the meantime just to feel like I'm almost there to 4K lol.

Any suggestions?

You'll be very happy with the 820. The level of customization is unrivaled and it will help bring out the best possible performance of your already excellent OLED display.

I've got a 9000 on the way from Robert too. Looking forward to pairing it with the 77" CX!

This DAC very noticeably outperforms the DAC in the Oppo 205. I have both machines and use the balanced outputs on both.

So after scrolling through all the menus and browsing this thread, am I right in assuming that the front display can't be turned off?

It can. You need to enable high-clarity sound.

How does that relate to the display being turned off?
