I just bought the 9000 or 900 remote for my 820. It works so much better than the old remote. It matches it perfectly Is easier to use too. Best $15 I have spent in a long time.

Does anyone know if Shout Factory blu-rays (Region A) work with the remote trick to circumvent the region lock on the UB820?

I know the trick works with region A criterions, but I was hoping to buy Shout's upcoming Event Horizon.

Thanks

Not in my experience, no.

The small non-lighted remote is about the only con of the 820 package. Didn't even realize that a 9000 remote would work with it. Great idea! Despite the nice price in Yogi6807's link, that one is missing the HDR Setting button. Thanks to those of you that mentioned that the European 9000 remote also works with US players, I grabbed one of those since that does include the HDR Setting. I should now be in possession of the perfect player!

Just as an update to this, I ended up exchanging the disc and the new one has no problems. So it definitely was the disc, although it still is strange the PS5 could handle it without any issues. First time I've had a disc that refused to play - I've had a few I had to clean due to some freezes, but never had one where that didn't completely fix the issue until Dunkirk. There really wasn't any visible scratches on the disc, although admittedly there definitely was a layer of coating that was very difficult to completely remove.

It's been a week since I received the Panasonic DP-UB820, and so far I love my new 4K player, best $400 I've spent on a Blu-ray player!
And also I'm coming from the LG UBK90 which is a decent player for the most part, but obviously this Panasonic really do blow that LG out of the water!

Why would you use that button? It does nothing but artificially raise the brightness level. Which means it also raises blacks in the video you are watching. The only advantage it has over just raising the brightness on my tv is the black bars stay black.

Mirroring, Setting, and Picture Setting buttons are also not included. A “close enough” remote that’s missing some of the functions is no better (or worse) than just using the one that originally came in the package. With the Euro version though, you do get the better remote and ALL the functions.

Each to their own, but I've got several of these replacement remotes that don't have the HDR setting button and I couldn't care less as I always go into the Picture Settings menu to change anything, a button for which I do have on my remotes. They don't have 'mirroring' but then I don't care aboot that either.

Anyone have their settings to the 820 posted somewhere in the thread? Or would you mind sending me your advised settings? I just picked this player up a few weeks back and am just now getting around to being able to play with it and it has alot of settings. Im running a 7.1.4 setup (7 stage 1 sub 4 atmos) not sure if I have that surround setup listed correctly but you get the idea. I appreciate any help.

On Saturday, February 13, 2021, I wrote this to Panasonic:

Quote:
Dear Panasonic,

I have some suggestions for a new firmware update for your amazing lineup of Ultra HD Blu-ray Players. I would like you to add an option in the HDMI Resolution setting that makes the player automatically output the resolution of the content being played (e.g. 480i/576i for DVD-Video and 480i/576i content on BD-Video and Ultra HD Blu-ray, 480p/576p for 480p/576p content on BD-Video and Ultra HD Blu-ray, 720p for 720p BD-Video and 720p content on Ultra HD Blu-ray, 1080i for 1080i BD-Video and 1080i content on Ultra HD Blu-ray, 1080p for 1080p BD-Video and 1080p content on Ultra HD Blu-ray, and 4K for Ultra HD Blu-ray). I prefer to use my display's upscaling rather than having the player upscale everything and output even DVD-Video as 4K, and right now I have to keep manually changing the Resolution setting when I play a disc of a different format than the one I played last. Company "O," who discontinued players back in 2018, had this feature on their players. Also, there is currently a bug where if you switch from a Dolby Vision disc's menu to a bonus feature encoded in SDR, the player keeps outputting Dolby Vision rather than switching to SDR. This bug does not affect HDR10 and HDR10+ discs. If you can, I would also like you to add (Super) Video CD support, which company "O's" players also supported and would be possible as these do not require specialized hardware unlike other unsupported disc formats. Other than that, I have really been enjoying the DP-UB9000.

Thanks
And today they gave me this response:

Good ideas, but who knows if Panny is even supporting their players anymore. It's been a loooong time since the last firmware update. They have yet to address the Lionsgate Dolby Vision glitches.

Lionsgate?! I have no idea what you're talking about as I do not have any Lionsgate Dolby Vision discs. Also, the DP-UB420, DP-UB820 and DP-UB9000 are current models still being produced and supported by Panasonic.

Some of their most recent Dolby Vision discs have playback glitches when using the Dolby Vision layer that affects Panny 4k players.

Maybe Panny still makes players but when they fail to keep the firmware up to date, they "ain't" supporting their players.

I wasn't going to use a competitor's name when writing to a company! That's something they would say!

Companies don't burst into flames if you mention their competitors to them! Just FYI!
