I agree; an 8K Blu-ray disc is unlikely. So no 8K Blu-ray player this side of earth.

8K UHD, not likely but not impossible either.

Basically there isn't much material shot in 8K. They could squeeze the content on 100GB discs but it's the lack of 8K content is why it will not happen anytime soon. Not many movies have been shot in 8K, I think Guardians Of The Galaxy volume 2 was shot in 8K. If Hollywood shoots more movies in 8K than it could become a thing one day like 4K.

Now 8K TV's that upscale content to 8K will definitely become popular and outsell 4K sets. More and more 8K videos on Youtube. Phones can shoot video in 8K. So let's hope more movies are shot in 8K.

Simply shooting material in 8K does in no way guarantee an 8K deliverable, let alone an 8K workflow. VFX houses still deliver 2K CG in many cases because the usual deadlines for this sort of work hasn't gotten any shorter, and so they often literally don't have the time for the extra processing time.

Applied several Best Buy Rewards and added the protection plan to my purchase of the 820. I'm so excited!

Though I misread that it was ship to store or ship to home, so I picked the former and will be picking it up on Wed next week.

When the age of discs comes to an end I would assume people who care about quality will shift to things like Kaleidescape or hopefully a new cheaper alternative.

who knew?

I tried putting The Great Mouse Detective today and it seems like the player has issues playing that disc, it's mostly stuck on the intro logo. I tried putting the disc in my previous player and it worked fine. What's up with that and how can it be fixed?

UHD BD is only a small fraction of rapidly dwindling disc sales (under 10% I'm told) after five years. So, no, 8K is very, very unlikely.

I picked up the 820 on Wednesday. I've noticed that there are white specks flickering on and off along the left side of my TV screen when I use the 820. This doesn't happen when streaming directly from the TV itself, so I don't think it is my TV. I'm going to try a different HDMI cable in case it is just the cable. Has anyone else had this issue with the 820?

I would assume it's the HDMI lead.

Is there a specific type of HDMI cable that I should switch to? I have the 4K Ultralink cable at the moment.

I tried another cable, but I think I messed up because it was an 8K cable, and doesn't seem to be very compatible because the image keeps dropping out.

If it is proper 8K cable, it won’t create havoc. However, I have tested many 8K cables that can’t even pass 18 gbps 4K.

It is the Zeskit 8K Maya cable. It is designated as 2.1, but my TV is 2.0, so that's why I figured maybe it is a problem.

They properly designed 2.1 cable should be backwards compatible. Try Ruipro hdmi cables. They are excellent. I can vouch for them, as all my HDMI cables are from them.

You'll be fine with a certified Premium High Speed HDMI Cable from Monoprice, unless you've got specific length needs you don't need to pay more than you would for an average UHD release.

You will need decent cables throughout if you've got a switcher or splitter in the chain.

There isn't any need to buy a Cat 3 Ultra High Speed HDMI cable unless you need it for your console/AVR and I'd be wary of anything labelled as HDMI 2.1 as they may not be certified (cables shouldn't be labelled based on the device specification just the cables').

I'd assume any drop outs are still cable related unless they're handshake issues.

Seriously? a UB820 or UB9000 stopped working after a week. Must have gotten a defective unit out of the box. Mine is still working like a champ since the day I bought it.

Picked up the 820 today.
Had no idea about any production issues or price drops.
Anyway, can't wait!

So, now that I have it, how do I make it Region-Free for Blu-rays?
