I read in the AVSForum that firmware 1.66 among other features comes with the functionality to add external subtitles. I don't remember what other characteristics it has.

Yes my 9000 came with 1.64 also. Not sure if I want to take a chance and use the 1.66 from China.

Is it the 9000 with the newer chip? if it is I probably wouldn't update it unless it's an automatic download.

I would say so.

I haven't looked into that particular display but my UB420 is pretty solid.

I had 2 different Sony X700's that were no good. My UB420 is so good I'm tempted to get an UB9000 before they are gone but then ........ The UB420 is so good I don't actually need it.

It’s still the UB9000 with AKM DACs but these are post COVID made in Czech Republic instead of China. Part number is DP-UB9000P-K, the one with the new ESS DACs is DP-UB9000P1K. BTW, as of today, there is no information on which ESS DACs model is inside the UB9000P1K. We hope it’s not the same Denon and Marantz are using to replaced the AKM DACs which is ESS 9010 which has worst SINAD than the AKM is replacing.

The new UB9000 SINAD is supposed to be better than the old one, but using headphones switching back and forth between the old vs new UB9000 I can’t prefer one to another. They just sound very slightly different but I have no preference between the two.

Who is selling the UB9000P1K? I see World Wide Stereo has it "In Stock" but I don't think that's the P1K as I got one last week from them and it was the UB9000P-K. B&H Photo has it in "Pre Order" and showing that it comes with ESS DAC. I think the P1K is not out yet, at least not in the USA. I returned mine to World Wide Stereo because it came with a scratched remote and got a new one from another dealer and this new one is the same UB9000P-K made in Czech Republic. I have until October 1st to return it so if the new UB9000P1K prove to has better sound quality over 2ch analog outs, then I would request a RMA and get it but as of today, the UB9000P-K sounds GREAT with CDs over analog outs.

I don't think anybody is going to get it before Robert @ Value Electronics, though.

No idea, but I just received my player last week from Panasonic.ca, and it has a manufacturing date of June 2021. I tried doing a firmware update, and it said everything was up-to-date.

Hope that helps.

Awesome player by the way!

The Panasonic 820 is my go to UHD player for everything. I love it, but it would be really nice for Panasonic to provide us with a firmware update after all these years. A few movies do have some glitches in Dolby Vision such as Knives Out for which a simple fix is likely doable at low cost.

Only the Chinese model. Whatever region that is - C? And the external subs are pretty grotesque. Like they have a transparent colored background. And are chunky. Very little control. And the text coding isn't good, so doesn't handle Nordic characters for example.. The oppo external subs are so much better.

Robert, do you know what ESS DAC model is inside the UB9000P1K?

Thanks for the info, Robert. Looks like then my UB9000P-K with AKM 4493 DACs is a keeper. I have other equipments with ES9038Q2M (MA mini-i Pro 3 and ARCAM ST60 Streamer) and I'm very familiar with their sound signature. With CDs, the AKM 4490 sounds a bit warmer to my ears compared to the ES9038QM2.

If you measure the 2-channel outputs the new ES9038Q2M: 768 kHz/32 bit 2ch DAC has 1 db lower s/n ratio and a very slightly larger dynamic tonal range than the AKM 2-channel DAC.

Not sure you can hear these minimal differences, but it is measurable.

Thanks again, Robert. I know you sent the UB9000 to Amir for review. Would you be able to do the same with the UB9000P1K? Would be great to have the new UB9000P1K measured by Amir at ASR as well

Yes, I love that idea!

For now I only have my personal evaluation UB9000P1K so I want to wait for the first US allocation to arrive.
