Audiophiles purchase the Sony for its SACD and DVD-Audio features. If you need SACD and DVD-Audio get the Sony. However if you have no plans on buying SACD and DVD-Audio discs, then videophiles purchase the Panasonic for its auto Dolby Vision HDR feature, HDR10+ feature, and tone mapping feature.

The Panasonic UB9000 is a GREAT and FINE CD player as well. That's basically the reason I got it. Yes, I play UHD 4K Blu-Ray movies as well but as a CD player is one of the best in the market right now.

Both Sony and Panasonic are the best 4K Blu-ray players in production in terms of reliability and firmware updates. I know family members that are still using Panasonic 1080P Blu-ray players from the year 2010, and for the last 11 years they work fine.

Choosing a Sony or Panasonic 4K Blu-ray player is recommended.

To a certain extent. Real audiophiles don't buy Sony 4K BR players.
Those are just features to accommodate.

* Real audiophiles upgrade their turntables. ...Till the end of times ...

And the Panasonic 9000 here is the most videophile and audiophile 4K BR player on the planet available today.

I made my decision: I have the Panny UB9000 on the way to me now, which can also spin Blu-ray Audio. I have my Marantz SA-10 Reference for SACDs and CDs, and I'll hold on to my Sony player for DVD-A.

Let’s us know what you find when comparing the SA-10 Reference with the UB9000 when playing CDs.

Some people do not have the space for 3 players, and wish in the future some company would make a player like the year 2016 OPPO UDP-203 that does everything.

I like the Panasonic players, but I wouldn't tell anyone they're well supported.

They are not well supported but they still yield the best picture quality for me (hence I sold my 203)

My main complaint about the 820 is that damn auto power off/ power saving function.

A firmware update could be written to offer a option to turn off the power saving function. Some people pause a long TV series and leave their player on over night and resume the next day. A feature that forces a auto turn off, of the player is a deal breaker for many.

Why do you pseudo promise these things? If Panny didn’t provide this change in the new firmware on the updated models with the new DAC’s, then it surely is never coming. It’s been asked for by an Insider here on Blu-ray.com, and he only heard crickets. This issue vexes a lot of owners, per the comments in this thread, But Panny evidently just. doesn’t. care. Full Stop.

I am not Panasonic and I made no promise. I used the word "could". If Panasonic decides not to do the firmware update then that's their problem with lost sells by some consumers.

Oppo should come back to us; we would be better off in this world.

That custom firmware also gives you the option to turn off the power saving function...

I have a quick question: does panasonic indicate which model is the P1K and which model is the original on the UB9000 player itself? What about packaging difference?

When I look at the images of both older and newer models on crutchfield they look identical, and I would like to know how to tell the two apart if I ever do compare the two.

Thanks!

As a 30 year veteran software developer,,and someone with an electronics engineering degree, the state of stuff like this just disgusts me viscerally. Don't these people have any personal pride in their work and respect ford their 8mdustry and customer base? If I was a developer at Panasonic, I'd feel sick with shame.

I just bought a 2nd 820 from BBY and it has repeatedly had this issue where it will not respond to the remote or buttons on the device, even when unplugging the power cable from the device, the only way I'm able to get it to respond is to remove the power cord from the power strip, I have another 820 I bought a few years ago and never had this issue before, do you think this is an issue with the power cord or device? I'm probably gonna end up exchanging it.

I'd exchange it so you don't have to worry about it.
