It sounds a lot worse in person...My phone's microphone just sucks. I can hear the fan from my chair if the machine is paused or in the settings.

Any suggestions or should it go back? Does it make sense to just get the 9000 at this point.
My brother just bought an 820 and it's pretty quiet, not as quiet as my 203 but definitelty not extremely noisy. You need to take that back marine.

Nah. I had the 203 and compared it very closely with the UB9000. After spending quite a long time comparing them both on my projector setup, I sold my 203 and keep the 9000 instead.

Ah I see. I have the Sony X90J and I have Motion and Cinemotion off. I did keep Reality Creation on the standard 20 to use the cognitive processor for upscaling purposes. But I suppose if the 820 is already upscaling, I don’t need the TV to do it. Guess I’ll play around.

It’s not a replacement, per se, but my OPPO did need to be serviced after very low use which was disappointing. I wanted a second 4K player for another room and the 820 seemed to be a decent option. Crazy that the UB820 came out in 2018 and still has no successor.

There really isn't a need for Panasonic to spend money on building a new player as it does everything it needs to from their perspective. Yes, they could improve on things from ours, but it does what they think is enough.

I don't have a projector. I have a Sony A9G and if you're referring to PQ, then there's zero difference at least through my display. Operational wise, features and ease of use these Panny's cant compare to the Oppo.

If you use the 4:4:4 as mentioned in my video and also use the HDR Optimizer, you should definitely see a noticeable difference between the two. Most people don’t actually set the player properly so they can’t see the difference. This is simply they don’t use the superior chroma upsampler and/or the HDR Optimizer (they thought the do but haven’t actually run it)

Yeah, so I read a few other people online also use 120 or 130 for audio delay. I tried 120 and that seems to have fixed the issue. I tried out the same Star Wars blu-ray, Elf on blu-ray, The Fellowship of the Ring blu-ray, and 4K UHDs of Blade Runner 2049 and Mission Impossible: Fallout. I also turned off a few TV picture processing options I left on for upscaling (but the player can just handle that). Everything seems good now but I'll keep an eye out when I fully watch a film.

120ms to 130 ms is about right. Whenever I have to use manual delay for these olayers it’s usually at 130 mS based on my sync method.

Not really in most cases. For example, the Sony A9G rolls off the chroma anyway so there's literally no benefit to sending it 4:4:4 unless you're in the Graphics/Game picture mode. If you do that, yes you can see the difference (with test patterns and inches away from the screen), but most people keep it in Custom/Pro settings and send 4:2:2 12-bit and let the TV do the 4:2:2 to 4:4:4 to RGB conversion. I think if people are seeing "drastic" differences, then it's a setup issue and not specifically to 4:4:4/4:2:2/4:2:0 differences. There's a reason blu-ray and UHD encode is 4:2:0 because there's almost no difference in visual quality and almost any modern device can properly upsample whether it's at the TV or the player. When I tested the Oppo 203, UB9000, and PS5 using S&M UHD tests (and getting advice from Stacey Spears directly on what to look for) the chroma differences were the least impactful and almost impossible to tell. I kept the Panasonic because of the HDR Optimizer being what I needed for my OLED and the 1080p upscaling was a hair sharper.

The assumption that 4:2:0 is enough is actually false. At 4:2:0, it is at the lowest commom denominator. The upsampling from 4:2:0 back to 4:4:4 requires math and interpretation. While the math can be the same, the interpretation may be different. And that what makes the most difference.

However, TVs like many Samsungs I have calibrated, they don’t do the 4:4:4 upsampling properly and the CUE is very visible.

I’m considering upgrading my LG player to the UB820, which is now showing as $400 on Amazon. It was the same price at Best Buy, but it returned to its original $500 listing recently. What are the odds the Amazon price will stick?

Didn’t know that. Hopefully they sprung for a top tier ESS because as a general rule AKM>ESS.

As I mentioned earlier. I own both versions. They merely sound different from each other. I don’t have a preference between the two although on paper the new UB9000 should sound better.

Out of curiosity, exactly what does the bad DVD deinterlacing look like on Panasonic UHD players? Does it look like bob deinterlacing (CRT-like flicker), discard deinterlacing (jagged edges at half the frame rate), or weave deinterlacing (constant combing)? Also, does it affect all DVDs (including movies with progressive 3:2 pulldown) or just DVDs that are known to be interlaced (i.e. TV show DVDs).

I plan on getting a Panasonic UHD player since my parents bought a new TV, but the reports on its bad DVD deinterlacing had me slightly concerned, so I thought I'd ask if anyone could describe what it looked like in more detail.

All DVDs are interlaced. There is no such thing as progressive DVD.

I don’t find the de-interlacing is bad. I find the upscaling to be mediocre, nothings special.

Default Panasonic UB820/UB9000 4K UHD Blu-ray player

Ultra HD Blu-ray discs can hold much more data than standard Blu-ray discs, so they can deliver full 4K resolution along with enhanced color and contrast. 4K Blu-ray produces the sharpest, most textured picture quality I've seen on a 4K screen. Most notably, the format offers superior compression, color, and audio quality. Compared to 4K streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray presents video and audio content with far less compression. This means you'll get a more stable image with no drops in quality.

Panasonic is the best upscaler out of my 3 players Samsung lg are the other 2. never heard anybody say Sony was better so that is 4 players. Oppo is probably better so my guess is reavon too in dvds. I would just buy a DVD player and let the tv processor upscale it if it is possibly better. It’s cheaper than buying a reavon or oppo for source direct.

I know others have a different opinion, but I’ve found the Panny’s deinterlacing of DVDs to be better than what I’ve gotten from good players from Pioneer, Sony, and Toshiba. You needn’t be concerned.
