The biggest issue that I have seen with the Panasonic 820 is when you connect it to a 4K projector it doesn't recognize it being connected to It. I tried changing from the 4:2:0 to the 4:2:2it keeps saying not connected to a TV ok well the player should automatically know that it's connected to a 4K projector. If I connect the Sony X800M2 it automatically knows that I'm connecting it toma 4K projector. Obviously the Panasonic 820 has problems when connecting to a 4K projector.

I don't think that's what it means, if it says it can't "connect to a TV" that doesn't mean it doesn't recognise a projektor, it's just a generic message that flashes up if it can't connect to the attached display. There's a deeper problem there in your signal chain, there are several people on here with projektors who have zero issues with the 820.

Is it a full fat 4K PJ? I aks because if the player is defaulting to 4:2:0 then it doesn't think there's enough bandwidth there in either the HDMI cabling or device(s) it's connected to.

My Apple 4K tv streaming device uses 4:2:2 so I'm thinking about getting the Sony X800M2 because I never had any real problems with it like with the Panasonic 820 unit. The apple 4K tv device automatically knew what it is connected to. I'm not a very big fan of Panasonic like I used to be.

I owned mostly Sony players for years. The freezing is not a myth. They froze a lot. I did find that keeping them disconnected from the internet helped. But not 100%. My 420 and now 820 have never frozen. I liked my X800 until something went kablooy. Every time I turned it on, it was like I was turning it in for the first time. Had to go through set up over and over.

As Geoff said, it's possible it is an HDMI Cable issue. Meaning it's not getting enough bandwidth to transfer a proper 4K Signal to the projector, hence it not detecting the projector. You have to make sure to use a High Speed HDMI Cable that can handle 18 Gbps speeds. What kind of HDMI Cables do you have?

So far so good for this particular Panasonic unit. And I also have had zero issues with Atmos using my Vizio Elevate hooked up directly to the TV using Earc like I did with my Samsung 4K TV in the past.

I guess it's a Samsung issue. Because the Sony TV I have now is having no issues whatsoever decoding the signal properly. No annoying audio cut outs or anything. I tested it out with Blue Underground's 4K release of the underrated gem that is Dead and Buried and the film looked and sounded fantastic.

So far, it has been absolutely worth buying the 820 again.

I'd imagine it is, to get eARC and Atmos to work with some models you actually have to turn eARC off in the menu, the AVR then displays ARC, but you can return Atmos and HD audio through HDMI. Which makes very little sense!

Worried that times running out for players in general, which motivated my purchase.
It dropped to the same price last year as well. Holding out for a $350.00 deal but it probably will not come.

The glossy plastic also retains dust like a sonofabitc@! I was happy with mine (until it turned out to be defective), but I agree the build quality is rather cheap given it's a $500 player. The remote is also rubbish as well and from the 2009 Panasonic parts box. I recommend upgrading to the UB9000 remote.

To think the OPPO 203 only cost $50 more in 2016.

Based on inflation since 2016, the Oppo 203 would cost $680 today.

Still $419 less than the UB9000.

Hello, so I buy this player but have the following issue, when I want to go to any options or settings, when pushing the botton on tje control to let's say, access the options, it goes to the options menu for one second and then automatically returns to the home menu, can't access to any option or settings because of this. Any advice on how to solve this? I already turned it off and on several times with no results. Maybe resetting the player? How do I reset it?

Just noticed something in the settings with 7.1 audio reformatting is set to auto, is it best to leave it set to auto or turn it off?

Turn it off. It may duplicate the side surrounds into the rear surround channels if hit with a 5.1 channel track.

If you do go from Panasonic 820 to Sony X800M2 .... I'd like to know how long it takes for you to realize it was a mistake.

So, report back if you can.

The X800M2 is quicker and better at playing filez, but aside from that it’s pretty garbage compared to the Panny.

Just buy this and the Kaleidescape for your non-DoVi and your HT's good to go.

Anyone have any playback issues with their copy of Top Gun: Maverick? The site reviewer noted that it would not work on his 9000.
