Video Resolution - AUTO will send everything in 4K, native or Upscale depending on your source. Panny does godd job with upscaling so better leave it to player. If you don't want to use upscaling, you need to manually change the video resolution depending on source.

That is the one annoying thing about the player, no source direct option.

They are talking on AVS forum that the USA launch of the UB9000 could be delayed possibly till January. It could also and it's a slim chance be cancelled for release in the USA altogether. The information on AVS forum came from Robert with Value Electronics. The player is currently out now in the UK.

When you play a 4:3 DVD on Panasonic players is it normal for the player's on-screen-displays to be horizontally squeezed? It seems odd that the player would squeeze everything like you'd see if you changed the ratio with your display.

Well, that will make it much easier to choose between the Panny and Pioneer

At least the LX500 is a much better option than the UBP820. Still sucks the UBP9000 won't likely be an option for the States. Not sure what Panasonic has against us with no TVs and now potentially no reference 4k player

See Japanese groups look to follow Panasonic out of UK - FT.com

Quote:
Britain’s corporation tax is less than 20 per cent and due to drop further in 2020, well below Japan’s corporate tax rate of just over 30 per cent. That could present Japanese companies, especially those with financing or supply chain hubs based in the UK, with liabilities imposed by Tokyo on companies judged to be exploiting tax havens.

Panasonic said at the time that it was making the headquarters move in anticipation that a “no deal” Brexit could result in “potential fiscal obstacles by the application of different rules and regulations between the UK and EU”.

For many Japanese companies, the same concerns have crystallised their desire to reorganise their businesses and have European subsidiaries controlled by operations outside the UK. But the potential Japanese anti-tax haven liability on the capital gains from an EU-based merger involving a UK subsidiary has been a large obstacle.
The point I am making is that Panasonic uses the UK/EU marketplace to its advantage to sell products for more money. Canada would fall under similar tax rates being part of the legacy UK commonwealth. Are they financially challenged in the USA marketplace, very likely. Using Onkyo/Pioneer and Sony as comparison to this marketplace they seem like small fish IMHO. Perhaps in time they will regain their presence after the plasma debacle.

I submitted an issue regarding Netflix when the UB820 is configured to SDR/BT2020. REC709 is output instead of BT.2020.

Amazon does output SDR BT.2020.

I got a reply stating they don't understand the question.

The workaround to get SDR BT.2020 from Netflix is to turn on the option to convert SDR to HDR for the network apps. Then SDR/BT2020 mode does output SDR BT.2020. But I am concerned as to what it might be doing in this case and I don't want to leave that conversion turned on.

Why do you say that? Just curious, because I was thinking of getting the 820...

When it comes to playing shiny round things, the 900 and UB820 are PROVEN with 4K. How well did last years Pioneer 4K player do? Exactly.

What was wrong with last year's Pioneer players?

Of course you aren't talking about the Super Audio CD and DVD-A shiny round things.

If it's actually outputting a 4:3 signal with TV-generated side borders and not a 4:3 inside a player-generated 16:9 container (as some players can do depending on how you set the aspect ratio in the setup menus, no such option on the Panny UHD decks though) then yes, this is normal because the OSD is designed for 16:9 output.

DP-UB820 is a wonderful device for video, I do think that it is better than Oppo. Linked to a good soundbar it’s a great solution for whom has a shouting wife that isn’t keen on av technology and doesn’t allow him to ruin the living room design. Of course Oppo 205 and Panasonic UB9000 are more appropriate for a complete home theatre.

I haven't read many reviews on the LX500 but it has good build quality and no streaming apps. It's just a dedicated disc player. I bet the video is amazing though on the unit.

There is still a chance it happens and gets released. It just doesn't look like it will be this month. It has not been 100% cancelled for a USA release just yet.

There's nothing wrong with the UBP820 (videophile) or LX500 (audophile/videophile) but it's what you want in your player. I prefer a universal player that has high quality components and is built to last. To me the choice of the LX500 or UBP820 is a no-brainer. Here's a nice comparison (but it doesn't compare DACs, chipsets, etc.):
