My box and book have become somewhat discoloured; streaky brown lines have appeared inside the packaging. Very odd.

Mine has a brown spot on the book near the spine. It came like that when I bought it new on Amazon.

Mine arrived with discoloration on the spine, too. I don't think I will return it for another, as it only shows when I take the book out of the box.

Then again, it IS a collectors set... should I risk getting a lesser film frame? Or chance getting a better frame with a flawless book spine?

Mine is like that too!!! I kept it. It's just a little dot of what appears like glue.

Great! I didn't want this in the first place because I wanted a compact version, but couldn't find a 3-disc version anywhere else so I bought it eventually.
I guess I will be stuck with something similar too when it comes..

I wonder why it has it? Did it come out over time? I don't know. It isn't that big of a deal though. I bought it for the movie itself. The book is an added bonus. The defect doesn't bother me.

well, it's not really a bonus when you're paying for the book too in the price, is it?
That's why I was searching for a compact version that has the 3 discs.

$35. That's a Twilight Time title. Haha. I didn't return mine because of the film strip. I really like the scene. Maybe send an email to get a replacement book to Sony? I'm not sure if they're like Criteion. Where you provide photos and they'll send you one.

Yes, we should give that a try. If we make enough of a stink...

The first image is similar to mine in terms of colour and the nature of the streak. Perhaps I'll take a photo or two later, but mine runs all the way down and looks awful, and seems to affect several different parts (I believe, from memory, the book but also the inside of the box).

I think I already wrote it in my original post, but I ordered this day one and it definitely didn't arrive like it, so it's been affected by the air/moisture since, I guess, despite it being reasonable here.

I wish I could get a replacement of the clear plastic slipcover. My copy fell the other night and it was all that was damaged.

I received it with 2 cuts (actually one cut and a small hole) on this plastic slipcover, but I wouldn't put myself into trouble for a replacement. Although I'm really bugged about it. I don't mind the discolorization on the book, but I mind that.
I wish they sold these seperately so that we could buy one!

It cant get better than this now surely?
if anyone is thinking it's not stellar, then your viewing display might be the problem, a non collaborated set, old set, lower end projector, etc etc.
but this restoration and this BLU RAY is outstanding, I really don't see how you could get it any better without over doing it like the remastered PATTON or something and we all dont want that.
this was perfect in my opinion.
so happy with it..

Question

Is the JP Mi4k release of this film significantly better than the US edition?
I already have the regular and collector's edition box set of this film, but I am not really impressed with the PQ.
It's not nearly as impressive as the new Spartacus restoration IMO.

There are some compression artifacts (macroblocking), and maybe a bit of banding. I don't remember it too well.

Is the Mi4k version more filmic and compression artifact free?

I am asking because I am about to order the Mi4k edition of Groundhog Day, so might as well order this one along with it.

You can judge for yourself.
The US/UK version has a slight hint of red push:

and the JP version has a tad better detail in some places (look at the red cloth of the camel):

but I doubt you could tell the difference if you watched them next to each other.

I have seen these screencaps already, but they don't tell you what the film looks like in motion, concerning compression artifacts.
I would like the opinion of a videophile, who has seen both.
