Steven Spielberg comments about that in the bonus features of the original DVD, I believe. The team that was responsible for the restoration showed the movie for a few members of the cast and crew of the original movie (at least that's what I remember) and suddenly David Lean turned it into an impromptu audio commentary/lecture, and Spielberg wished that it had been recorded. It's odd that he has opposed doing audio commentaries even after that experience. Him talking about making Jaws or Close Encounters of the Third Kind could end up quite a similar experience for many fans of his work.

not that the hidef airing via HDNet was terrible, but I've noticed some hidef transfers which were corrected before being released onto bluray - 'Winged Migration' looked like a battered print when compared to the blu. If Sony releases 'Oliver!' as it did on HDNet - I'll kick a puppy.

I can't see them not releasing it this year, it's the 50th anniversary. But then again, Ben Hur was 2 years overdue.

November look like a safe and legit bet for US date as well

They can afford to take their time. It probably isn't going to sell like hotcakes compared to say something like Indiana Jones. It would be nice if it comes out this year, but I'm not gonna sweat it.

This went up for pre-order in France as well as a couple other countries in Europe earlier this spring and was pulled a few days afterward. Until an actual date is announced, the pre-orders mean absolutely nothing and even once a date is announced they mean nothing given the history this title has because it's been "nearly released" at least 4 or 5 times over the last half century they've been remastering it.

So that's where it was. You can obviously tell that my copy hasn't seen the light of day in a long time and with the blu-ray tantalisingly almost within grasp....

I attended the pre-dawn ceremony at The Alamo last year, commemorating the 175th anniversary of the fall of what is now called the Shrine of Texas Freedom. It was incredibly emotional. You ran the full range in your heart, from anger, to mourning, to compassion and peace.

The Alamo has been depicted in films numerous times. I find it absolutely heartbreaking the studios will not pony up the funds neccessary for Mr. Harris to save the 1960 film by John Wayne, nor will allow the rest of us to donate to the cause (I can only assume for legal reasons, the worst fear in me thinks it is for political reasons).

Very happy for Mr. Harris that his landmark restorative effort, Lawrence of Arabia, will soon be coming to the format it was probably born for in certain ways.

Now, if we could only get our keyboards clicking and find some way to bridge the divide, pressure a mediation, and allow Mr. Harris to save another film that has become a concern for him...1960's The Alamo.

If it will help motivate a restoration of The Alamo, I'll buy ten copies each of Lawrence, Vertigo, My Fair Lady, Rear Window, and The Godfather.

RAH has posts spread over the last several pages detailing his efforts to reconstruct the 2:22 version and how he went through tens of thousands of 65mm cuts to recover lost footage before essentially being roped in to bringing in David Lean himself after being told not too.

It also seems to be drawing in a lot of film pros with wonderful sidebar anecdotes of their own. If you love this film, it's a must read.
