Yes. LoA is essentially a British film, and Sony wouldn't release the carefully restored film on Blu-ray in the UK as a "barebones" release with no extras features. That would almost be as much of an insult as . . . suggesting the Brits aren't prepared for the Olympics.

I have viewed an unfinished disc that was MOS. I would presume that it was auto-compressed, and those parameters understood, looked superb.

And as a side note, reels are not always "reels." While in editorial reels are generally no longer than 10 minutes, in projection, they are doubled up, ie. 2,000 feet.

Snow White at seven reels, would be projected on four.

Lawrence, which is 26 reels, was projected on 13. A 70mm print weighed around 600 pounds.

Thank you, Mr. Harris, for responding.

I don't know if you own the CAV laserdisc box set for Snow White, but it is split across four sides, and the ins and outs across the discs match the four reel changes you describe. The side flips and disc changes actually "feel" like reel changes from the projection booth.

The purpose of my post above was to say if the final disc met your approval and it was split across one or two discs - fine. I don't care one way or the other, as long as it meets your approval. I can understand fans having anxiety over the PQ - that's par for the course these days on pretty much every title - but Lawrence, maybe more than any other catalog title, is a sort of Holy Grail of home theater, so anxieties are running a bit higher. I was simply referencing a comment you had made that you saw the film on one disc and "saw no problems" in order to sort of cool down the anxieties. I look forward to your thoughts on the final product, and can't wait to see the film in the theater again.

On a more personal note, I'm sure you've heard this from numerous supporters and admirers of your work, but if there is anything I or anyone else can do regarding The Alamo, please let us know.

Best,

ER3

Sorry that needs extensive explaining...
It doesn't need "extensive explaining". The point I'm making is that irony is something completely different. The only thing here that seems to need extensive explaining is the correct usage of the word irony.

For those who care, here's a good (and humorous) page that describes what actually constitutes irony.

The support is appreciated. As regards to Sony, Lawrence is not a "holy grail." It is merely another catalog title. This from a senior executive at Sony several years ago.

I can only tell you that I do not agree with the corporate position of film is film. And Mr. Crisp also treats this film as something special.

As usual, hope we can get a set with the movie and special features, but not a big box.

This just pisses me off. Either I buy an oversized box set (and I f'n hate the oversized swag boxsets) or I get no extras.

Video extras I want. Books (other than Digibooks which I love) and knick knacks I do not want. It's shitty that that's the choice they give us.

I see you fell into the blue section of the pie chart...well done.

Like someone else mentioned in another thread:

Last time I checked, this is a luxury item and Sony's in the business of making money.

Let's put things in perspective, here. I think people suffering due to the economy are more concerned with the rising cost of groceries, not the Collector's Edition of Lawrence of Arabia.

And if they are, then they can just buy the stripped-down version later on. Or, there's a region free version they can order from the UK for about 10 quid.

Really? You actually checked.

How about checking the prices of Collector edition Blu-rays. Its on the right side of the bell curve in price for a single movie edition.

I got corrected when I posted that in AVSforum (of course), and I was in error. It was the announcement of Sony's press release at Highdefdiscnews.com in which they said a single disc version was also listed on "Sony's Press Site". But I will be surprised if Sony doesn't also release a single disc version - even the "King of box of swag", Warner, releases a disc only version, usually as a retailer exclusive.

It's not clear what's included in the UK release, as the listing here on blu-ray.com just says "blu-ray disc" in the details. But UK online retailer Play.com lists the same Blu-ray as Amazon.co.uk and describes it as a "2 discs". I think that makes sense, as LoA is essentially a British film and Sony wouldn't release it on Blu-ray in the UK as a 1`disc barebones release with no extra features as the only option (no boxset in the UK).

Thanks, here's hoping. This is an essential film and I need to have it in my collection.

If it looks or sounds better on two disks, even if that is entirely due to placebo effect, that's O.K. with me.

And actually it works out to only £9.33 (under US$15)- the UK has a VAT (Value Added Tax) of around 17%, kinda like a sales tax except that it's included in the price, not added on like our sales tax. And when you order for delivery outside the UK, Amazon deducts the VAT from the price.
Are you sure of that? I ordered the Harry Potter box set not long ago and they charged me the USD equivalent of the price.

You get the price on release date which usually drops the prior week. I don't think it locks in in the event it goes higher.

Well, it's hard to tell when you compare the "USD equivalent of the price", because most credit cards charge 3% or more foreign transaction charge and then there's fluctuations in the currency exchange, so it's comparing apples to oranges. The thing to do is look at the UK Pound (£) price in your order and compare it to the Amazon UK listed price. In my order Lawrence of Arabia says £9.33 (before shipping) whereas the Amazon UK price in the listing says £11.20. I buy regularly from Amazon UK and I always get the VAT deducted from my price after placing the order.

No, you get the price you lock it in at, or lower if it happens to drop. They will not charge you a higher amount than whatever you've locked it in at.
