For anyone interested, here is a comparison between the last DVD release (bottom) and the new Blu-ray (top)

It's quite incredible just how pumped the sky-blue was; it's almost a VHS era look.

Nice trailer. A pity though the compression is so bad.
But I'm really very excited to finally watch this film in all its glory.
Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to attend a 70mm screening. But the restored Blu-ray will do fine for now.

I'm trying to decide if seeing this in theaters will ruin the blu ray experience for me...?

It looks like it's only playing in theaters as a Fathom event type thing near me. Anyone been to these in the past? Reviews I've read weren't kind.

so it's a satellite beam, and not a harddrive DCP -

"@#$% it", no sale.

last year's 'Taxi Driver' wasn't a Fathom Event - was it? I can't remember but that presentation was from harddrives - it's too bad Sony Hot Tix went belly up, those features were visually far superior to Fathom's shit fests.

I've never been to one of these but if it's done via satellite, count me out. I wanted to see it on the big screen but I'd rather it be done in the best way possible. I'll wait for the Blu...

Apparently others members have had trouble with these events in the past. I haven't had that experience myself, but I do live in a desert so rainstorms blocking the signal aren't exactly a big concern.

Btw, are Fathom events always a sat signal? I was under the impression that only the live events used satellite and prerecorded events (like LOA) were HDD like every other movie.

Either way, I'll be seeing it on the big screen.

Edit: Just did some searching online and it does appear fathom events are always satellite broadcasts.

Saw Singin In The Rain at a Fathom Event at a local CinrMark Theatre and would never go again waste of money. Picture look very poor.

I saw the Taxi Driver restoration at the Cleveland Cinematheque and it was terrific. I think it may have been a new 35mm print. I say this because the c-theque definitely doesn't have the equipment for satellite projected films. They show 35mm prints whenever possible.

Count me in as someone worried about Fathom. I think we need more information on these screenings. Many of here work full-time and some of us are looking to take off work for this

yes, as I recall Sony had struck some 35mm prints of the 'Taxi Driver' restoration - Film Forum in NYC played it as such.

why Sony is going cheap with the LoA 'Fathom' screenings just sickens me.

I consider it a mission of mine in life to one day see Lawrence on the big screen - but it will absolutely not be a Fathom event. That's just wrong.

What a classy trailer. Not an amateurish Bond 50 or Indiana Jones videos.

As much as I can't wait to pick this up, I'm still rather upset that this long movie was put on to one disc. There have been arguments here that "the Sony engineers must know what they are doing", and I don't doubt that, but considering engineers can be overridden by management/bean counters,I find it crazy this was not split into two discs at the intermission. Anybody remember the space shuttle Challenger tragedy with Morton ThioKol's management deciding to launch over the good judgment of the engineers?

Wow. There is a HUGE amount of middle ground between those two things.
