Just got my BD from the UK in the mail. Have we figured out yet if the UK and US versions are the same or different? I know there was some question as to whether the US version came with a second disc or not. Are they the same, just with different covers or different? I'm glad to have this early, but if they're the same, other than getting it early, I'm not sure there was any other plus to getting the UK version.

Are the specs identical? The Amazon website shows the US version has 216 minutes, while the UK version has 227 minutes. Also, Amazon shows the US version as being 2.35:1 while the UK version shows as 2.20:1. Are these mistakes, meaning they're really the same? Why is the UK version longer? How much of a difference is 2.35:1 vs 2.20:1? Last edited by worldchmps; 09-18-2012 at 04:18 AM. |

To my eye there is a significant difference. I think 2.2:1, which originated with Todd-AO, is the best looking aspect ratio. Also, if they use nearly the full image width on the negative, 2.35:1 would crop off a bit of the height of the image, either both top & bottom or just the bottom (hopefully not just the top!). IMO, 2.35:1 only makes sense for those films shot in 2.35:1, and 2.2:1 for those films shot in 2.2:1. [I am aware that the "2.20:1" or "2.2:1" aspect ratio is sometimes reported, probably correctly, as 2.21:1. That's a negligible difference that is ignored in most articles I have seen.] In the original 70 mm theaters, films shot and presented in 2.2:1, like Lawrence, didn't seem to call attention to their shape, and, when sitting fairly close to the screen, it was possible (for me, at least) to become very immersed while losing awareness of the shape of the image, and even the edges of the frame. I didn't experience this with any other aspect ratio. Two very immersive films that were shot in 2.2:1 and presented -- in their 70 mm versions -- in about 2.2:1 are Around the World in 80 Days (1956) and 2001: A Space Odyssey Last edited by garyrc; 09-18-2012 at 08:23 AM. |

Just noticed this is coming to the big screen on Oct. 4th! It is put together by Fathom Events though so I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not.
Edit: I notice this has been posted already, and it'll be shown in either 2K or 4K depending on the theatre. Here's press release again: http://www.fathomevents.com/classics...px?d=10/4/2012 Quote:
