Went to a Fathom showing of Singin In The Rain, what a waste of money.
Picture quality sucked. Walked out after half hour. Would not go to any unless they had a 35mm or 70mm film. FATHOM take your events and stick them!!!! |

Yeah I noticed they were doing a whole bunch of them. Strange they would use a crappy copy. You can't blame it on being used since its a limited showing and made especially for the event. Weird.

Yes the Singin In The Rain Showing I went to was a satellie feed. And the picture was not anything like a 35mm film. Very very disapointed. Not sure how the hard drive would look. But anything sent to a theatre over a satellie I will not go to. After I walked out I waited a few days for my blu ray to come. Now that's what I call a great picture.

I went to a Fathom showing of West Side Story and they windowboxed the presentation! I would love to see Lawrence of Arabia in the theatre but not windowboxed. Just an FYI...

as for the UK bluray - oh... my ... god! I've only watched the first half, but Sony and the restoration folk hit this out of the ballpark. I've seen the film in 70mm (as well as the work in progress hidef presentation on HDNet) but the lack of any print imperfections - scratches, nicks, reel change circles was unreal and was just visually amazing! |

Warmer sound? The old 6 channel magnetic tracks used for 70 mm features had at least the capacity of sounding "warmer" and less harsh than today's digital. That was not realized in every magnetic soundtrack, and, in 70 mm in San Francisco, the overture for Lawrence was a bit borderline in that respect, but the rest of the soundtrack was beautiful. It is true that the speaker systems in even the best road show theaters began to roll off below 40 Hz, but they cranked out a huge amount of bass just above that, and the rest of the audio range was precise, clean and spacious. |

Yeah, but are they really going to advertise it as "alright at best"? They ARE trying to get people to go

the 70mm print of 'South Pacific' I saw last Sunday, the magnetic sound in a THX auditorium was just gorgeous sounding. speaking of Peter O'Toole, I just recently saw 'Lord Jim' in 70mm last month, that was by far one of the most pristine 70mm prints I've seen of an older title film (probably since it's rarely screened) Sony could make my day and give that a bluray release too |

Did anyone else notice a slight aspect ratio shift during the movie? Specifically I saw it happen during the scene when Lawrence is questioned by the Turks, it looks like it changes from 2.20:1, to something more like 2.35:1. Just wondering if anyone else noticed this.
