I do too. I've been hoping that Warner will give the Casablanca 70th edition that same treatment too since I want the extras from the UCE but don't want all the swag and such.

As for LoA, I don't think there's any other way to get the 3rd disc besides buying the CE

I've seen the UK edition and that's not the case at all. It's a beautiful transfer.

I saw it projected last month in the cinema, and it looked fantastic.

Didn't notice anything that dramatic in the theater. It really looks fantastic, not DNR'd at all.

I'm not going to say the restoration absolutely didn't use any DNR because that's one of the restoration tools they use to restore old film. So it's not really a question of did they use it, but did they use sparingly (ie. is it noticeable?) Patton for example....way over used. But LOA doesn't have a problem with it.

Other than that Amazon page for the 4-disc set do we have confirmation that the main feature is entirely on disc 1? I am questioning that. Since a lot of the extra features listed on disc 2 are SD and only a few short HD features. I think trying to squeeze a classic like this onto one BD would be a huge mistake, but Sony did that for the bargain bin DVD of this title. But I am hoping that this is split for maximum video/audio performance and hoping the split occurs at the the original intermission point.

It's 1 disc, and it looks fantastic.

Have you looked at the reviews for this btw? This is easily one of the best transfers I've seen

Thanks. Still a little surprised but I would expect that disc is pushing the maximum storage capacity of the format. Even some other 3-hr+ movies have still had 12-15GB of remaining free space.

I have a feeling the decision whether or not to split it came down to the wire. They probably spread the extras across discs 2 and 3 just in case they wanted to put part two of the movie on disc 2. As it stands, it does seem rather silly to have such sparse extras spread over two discs. I guess it works from a marketing standpoint though.

This is coming next week. The $64 price tag is quite hefty and would be utterly outrageous for any other single movie. Still deciding on whether I want to risk this becoming hard to find while waiting for a better price.

I think the more likely reason is they wanted to make the CE seem more justified since the 3rd disc is exclusive to that set. If they put it all on the 2nd disc which is included with the standard ed. then the CE certainly wouldn't look as appealing. There's still not enough going for it for the money right now in my opinion.

How did this only get a 4.5 in the review, when its video and audio scores were both 5/5 ? Did it lose 0.5 star for not enough stupid swag, or what ? I just don't see how a classic, restored like this, doesn't score any better than some stupid animated film by Pixar ???

I don't think the quality of the film itself plays to big a role in the rating that they give the Blu-ray. I believe the reviewers place more importance on the Blu-ray itself, and how well it represents or presents the film. Obviously Lawrence of Arabia is on an entirely different level than any other animated film.

Because the review was actually of the standard release (roughly $19.99 retail) and not the special edition release (around $64 bucks). A good number of the extras are only available on the special edition, so the standard slimmed down release took a slight hit when it came to the "extras" category. If they do a separate review of the special edition release then it would likely get 5/5 when you consider all the extras included with that release.

I think $64 for any film is unjustified, but this was a close call. In the end I will be happy with the under $20 2-discer. I would guess that discs 1 & 2 are the same in both sets. So I can't justify a $40 increase for another BD special feature disc, CD and book. I am sure it is a nice set, but with all the other titles I have bought in the last 3 months and those other must haves coming out in the remaining Q4 my wallet appreciates the lower cost version.

Is the movie subtitled in French (Blu-Ray.com says yes, Amazon says no,...) ?
As the "French" version of the CE sells for $100, I'd rather buy the much less expensive US version of the CE
Thanks in advance !

It's not rocket science....

Blu-ray rating
Video 5.0 of 5
Audio 5.0 of 5
Extras 3.5 of 5

(5 + 5 + 3.5)/3 = 4.5

I don't see why anyone should put such emphasis on a score anyway, and it makes even less sense to compare this film to something from Pixar based on review scores..

Put more succinctly, I don't think the overall rating of any film should be affected by "bonus material", nor the quantity or quality of such fluff. I certainly don't buy a movie based on its bonus material (or lack thereof) and never will. And if it's acceptable to include "bonus material" as a rating category, I'd argue that a "content/story quality" category should then be added, for it is certainly more important than bonus content when judging the overall merits of a film.

At least then you wouldn't have a film like Brave get the same overall rating as a film like Lawrence of Arabia. That's still laughable, and the reason I made the Pixar reference.

It's funny the ways in which people can take offense on behalf of their favorite films. This film scored more highly than that much better film, this film got a digibook and this much better film didn't even get a slipcover, this film got a bunch of supplements and this much better film just got a barebones release and so forth and so on.

It really is interesting how personally people seem to take stuff like this sometimes.

And don't anyone get me wrong - I definitely get this. I've had similar reactions to various releases myself. But even then I think it's a little odd

What about all the people that do like extras? Or should everyone just think exactly like you?

I never watch extras if I dont have to... but even I know they are part of the package and deserve to have their rating incorporated into a review.
