This implies all the major display manufacturers will have Dolby Vision (LG, Samsung, Sony, etc.) Presumably they will also have the VUDU UHD Dolby Vision app. Anyone know for sure?

Maybe, but I thought unless something changed Samsung were not in the Dolby vision party

If a user wants both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos as part of their experience, then only Vizio’s Reference Series smart TVs will do, as it is currently the only 4K Ultra HD TV brand compatible with Dolby’s take on what HDR should look like.

If you don't have a Dolby Vision enabled TV, you can watch the VUDU UHD lineup using a ROKU 4.

lol, well ray, I feel you have an "emotional attachment" to another inanimate object....that be....

OLED tvs.

You’ve unequivocally promised to purchase an OLED tv by the end of next year. So tell me this, will you postpone that particular purchase in order to wait for an LG Dolby Vision consumer offered solution to become available to the masses if not on retail showroom floors (rather than professional conferences) by Christmas 2016?

I am emotionally detatched from brand as well as home entertainment media (digital or physical) I am interested in the highest quality of home entertainment. At present, the highest quality display is OLED. If someone brings a holodeck to market in the future which provides complete immersion in the movie, I'll be all for that.

As far as time frame for purchase is concerned, that seems to be on track. OLED prices are coming down rapidly and we are beginning to see competition from Panasonic and I believe Samsung will be in the game by 2016.

You younger folks can wait for the holodeck, but due to my advanced age (75 in a few days) waiting is an iffy proposition.

Back to Kaleidescape for a minute. Part of a 4K demo at Cedia promoting HDR and downloads vs streaming. I wonder if anyone has the full demo?

This better not be another HD-DVD/Blu-ray multiformat debacle. HDR should be HDR on all 4K TVs. I don't wanna have Dolby Vision exclusives for Vizio TVs or any other brand.

Dave Donald demos Kaleidescape 4K Ultra HD Strato Movie Player at CEDIA Expo 2015 - YouTube
A followup to the discussion of how Kaleidescape processes the standard mezzanine file for the end user.

"The finest way to watch a 4K Ultra HD movie today is via download, stored on a local hard drive played back at full bit rate, as we do.

There are two things that contribute to picture quality. One has to do with being sure you deliver a file with enough information that it can actually render a stunning image – that’s why we download – and the second has to do with reproducing that high bit-rate file in a manner that gives you gorgeous playback.

How does Kaleidescape tackle this?

Kaleidescape does the whole thing; or as we say in the US, ‘the full enchilada,’ – from the beginning until the end.

We get the mezzanine files from the studios and take the care and trouble to transcode them in such a way that the file we deliver to the hard drive plays back at bit rates between 50 Mbit/s and 100 Mbit/s.

That’s up to six times more bandwidth than the lossy compressed 4K streamed content.

Then we decode and render that file on state of the art hardware that is capable of delivering all of the quality inherent in that file.

As a consequence, Strato – which is a wonderfully engineered, beautifully architected product – is a one of a kind product. It is the one and only product that belongs in the highest end of the video market for home cinemas"

Exactly !!! No difference, but only from one vendor, Kaleidescape. VUDU gets the same standard Mezzanine. We know they dumb it down for streaming. What about for the download? Vudu offers both. I think its a one size fits all mentality with VUDU and other digital download vendors. They essentially deliver the same file for the download that they provide for streaming. I would be interested in knowing the file size and playback details for the Vudu UHD Dolby vision/Atmos file. Kaleidescape say they are the only ones providing bit for bit files with playback at 50 to 100 Mbps. What is it for VUDU downloads?
Anybody know? EDIT: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topi...ing/?p=4307702

VUDU is using a lot of compression in order to deliver 4K Ultra HD movies with lossy Dolby ATMOS at only a minimum of 11Mbps Internet speed required. To rent a 4K movie from VUDU it’s an extra $5 (around $9.99 total), to own a 4K movie from VUDU it’s an extra $10 (around $29.99 total). Some 4K movies of course might cost more or less depending on various factors.

At those prices I would rather purchase a physical 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray title when they are released in 2016, or I would rather go the Kaleidescape Blu-ray disc image download method (better quality then VUDU).

VUDU requires a minimum of 11 Mbps to deliver a UHD stream. What about the download? I read that Kaleidescape delivers a Blu-ray quality download in an hour or two depending on your connection speed. How long does it take to download the same movie from VUDU via the same ISP connection? What is the difference in file size? Has any Kaleidescape owner compared a bit for bit Blu-ray Kaleidescape Store download with a VUDU HDX download. Inquiring mind wants to know.

Default Vudu Launches 4K Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos Video Streams

I don't think there's any difference between VUDU's streaming and download options. Except that with download you might get the highest tier as with streaming it might drop if you're connection can't keep up. Last time I checked it topped at 9-10Mbps for 1080p.

Never seen a Kaleidescape with my own eyes (unfortunately!) but it's irrelevant. They use, bit for bit, the Blu-Ray encodes. So somewhere between 20-32Mbps in average? Although some blu-rays did go up to 40Mbps, not sure if that's the case anymore.

So a movie download on Kaleidescape would be 2 to 3 times slower on the same conditions.

Ray, if you don’t already have IOLs, you’re getting there (for senile cataracts), so something you should be aware of is ….. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post11472800

Not sure, but I doubt if UCI Eye (Irvine) offers FLACS though so you may have to travel a bit when the time comes.

Been there, done that twelve years ago. Cataract surgery and lens replacement both eyes. Recent trip to the ophthalmologist. Result: All systems GO. Eyes are OLED ready. Only recommendation was prescription blue blocker computer glasses to reduce eye strain and sleep time disruption. Should have them next week.

I read that ^ real quickly and at first I thought you were sending us to site about the ‘gunners’ (Arsenal football club) and an LED tv contest….http://tv.bt.com/tv/tv-from-bt/thank...11364016881752

hah, I guess you know where my mind is this weekend (on football/soccer). Anyway, good to hear everything went well with your surgeries as there can be complications (speaking of Irvine) which can be devastating…

In fact, I’m scrambling right now to attend a freebie just for the finger food and networking.
Do your 1031 exchange. The land prices are crazy and you likely have a ton of capital gains on 70 acres, but you can now afford the Kaleidescape!
