In fact they are not saying the standard grading is wrong or limited by the Blu-ray standard but that without CHANGING colors/dynamic range 4K is just useless at home.... ![]() ![]() Unbelievable.... |

James Finn from Fox just tweeted out the following information regarding the DI of The Martian. I posted it in that thread, but thought it might be of value here too.

The more I learn about this format, the less concerned I am about the DI. I will now proceed with buying any new release that I would normally buy in UHD, if it is in UHD.

Don't worry, they will do it properly in a few years and release the ultimate remastered edition. And maybe once more a few years later if they feel like it, this time the definitive edition in UHD 3D. You'll need a new player for that of course. |

Sure, there's barely a frame that goes by in movies these days that doesn't have some form of digital feckery or another, but that doesn't mean it's true VFX as it's amazing what they can do in just the grading suite these days. So all the split-screening, reframing etc that was done originally can be carried over to the newly graded 4K material without too much fuss. |

I suspect this is because of the already sharper and more orderly nature of CGI vs real images. I've noticed this in movies like Transformers where after they've been upscalled to 4K the CGI elements look a bit "hyper realistic" and are noticeably sharper than the photographic elements in the background. I agree too that the grading and editing can be redone by the computer very simply, since all of the changes and data will be stored, and can be reapplied frame-by-frame to the higher res sources. |
