I think too much weight may be placed by all of us on 4K vs 2K DI, instead of looking at what the product put out by the studio is.

One should not buy a 4K DI on the assumption is will be a stellar release, vs that of a 2K DI.

When I said counterparts, I meant other movies with a UHD release that were only 2K DI, not the blu-ray version or anything like that. Too many people have said "I wont buy if it isnt 4K DI", which is flawed thinking.
"Xmen Apocalypse was good, but not great"....it wasn't good or great, it was amazing.

People get SO hung up on something being 4K or not but all I care about is whether the end product looks good. As with 3D conversions being some of my favourite stereo experiences versus 'true' native 3D, I've gleaned far greater viewing pleasure out of 2K upscales than 'true' 4K transfers (on balance) thus far - though I will freely admit that the 4K-finished Deadpool is my favourite UHD if I had to pick one because it's a brilliant combination of resolution AND wider colour AND higher dynamic range.

But according to everyone here, the ones who aren't quite "there" yet are the filmmakers who still tend to work with 2k digital copies and render visual effects in 2k. I wonder if they choose 2.8k or 3.4k camera equipment for ease of use or familiarity, since 6k, 6.5K and 8k cameras have been readily available.
Real 4K is so overrated it's not even funny. HDR is more a game changer on the current generation 4K TV (just because HDR is only available on 4K TV). Getting a 4K TV with 10 bit panel and good HDR performance makes more difference in making your friends jealous than the difference between a 2K DI upscale and a true 4K transfer.

Case in point. I have a bunch of true 4K transfer UHD Disc and the Disc that actually makes my jaws drop was Pacific Rim, a 2K DI upscale that's considered reference/demo quality by a lot of reviewers.

That is just your perspective, some of us 4K/UHD projector owners with large screens have a different perspective (literally) on the subject. Lets just say there is no way I would trade my 133" scope screen for a 65" screen with a 1000 nits .

It's all about seating distance. a 65" screen at 6 feet fills about the same FOV as a 133" at 12 feet and you're sure to notice more detail at 6 feet than 12 unless you have perfect eyesight. Also, while affording a $10K plus true 4K projector (instead of those pseudo 4K ones at $3-5K) might not be a big deal (considering that I bought a Advent projection TV back in the late 70s at the same cost as a 10% down payment for a house) but i don't think I could quite afford a house that I can set up a 20 feet home theater room in the Silicon Valley nowadays which will set me back 6-10 mil easy.

There are arguments for people having a harder time perceiving 4k detail on smaller screens even with equal FOV. As human beings we have other clues that help us in perceiving absolute size so there is still something more to be said for that. I hear you about the added cost for the real estate but this does not apply in cases where people have a projection system in their living room or when another available room is repurposed so there are options in most cases.

Can't wait for JOHN WICK. Will be a nice upgrade since I only bought the BD for $10 from Target a couple months ago.
