Never assume anything with video PQ and differing formats.

For me and HDR, we went from something that was pretty reliable to directors intent (SDR 709) to something that is all over the place depending on what studio did it and whether it was on an LCD or OLED (mastering). Ridiculous.

Which is why SDR BT2020 10 bit has a lot of merit IMO, if you get a disc player that does it properly.

So is it the movie that was garbage or is it my Samsung UHD player to blame?

The movie wasn't the best on my Oppo in 1080p, so I'd put this one more on the movie itself.

It seems like it is now becoming a trend with DC Comics movies. First Batman vs Superman, also not so great in UHD, and now Suicide Squad

Wonder if they will support Dolby Vision.

Sony just announced their new OLEDs will have DV capability.

It seems that many use Pacific Rim as a reference for outstanding 4K HDR, yet PR is not even native 4K. So should we just not even bother checking the label for native or non-native 4K as it seems redundant and pretty much useless?

Yes, I am currently using 4K SDR BT2020 when I watch UHD films. I am planning to buy a 2017 LG OLED this year, so moving into DV and HDR10 will be the plan. So I am excited to see these coming.

PR was demo regardless, and like with 3D conversions and everything else the 4K DI is only part of what depends on how the finished product looks. So if you go into buying only 4K DI's and thinking they will all look great, you are setting yourself up for failure.

But, knowing 4K DI or not can play into my purchase or repurchase plans, plus it is nice to know when evaluating a movies PQ.

Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is 4K SDR BT2020? Are you actually playing 4K HDR discs on your Oled and getting the HDR logo to pop up in the upper corner or not?

Perhaps unrelated topic, but doesnt the type of panel a certain movie is matered on also has an affect on PQ?
For example if we use an Oled TV and the movie was mastered on a plasma or LED, Oled users might not find PQ as good as those who get to watch the same title on a plasma...And vice versa

The Panasonic 900 and Oppo 203 have the ability to play back a UHD disc in 4K, with wide color gamut 10 bit, while converting HDR to SDR so your display does not go into HDR mode and the image is accurate.

I use this so I still get the resolution and color benefit without the display going into torch mode.

What if we disable HDM Deep Color from the Oled TV? Would that result in the same 4K SDR 10-bit dispaly even using a different bluray player like my Samsung UH8500?

No, you get SDR Rec709 8 bit, so you lose wide color gamut.

The trick is keeping WCG and dropping HDR, which projectors have been doing. I learned it from them and it looks great.

So it comes down to the player we are using

Yes.

The key is, if you are happy with HDR on your display, there is no reason to worry about it.
