I believe the only source for it being a 4k DI is IMDb. And by itself, that is not a reliable source. It only had 2k DCPs. To my knowledge, there are no articles or any other corroborating evidence to verify it has a 4k DI.

But I got that information from this site; are you saying that blu-ray.com is unreliable?

I found this, too:

"Warner’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was shot digitally using ARRI Alexa XT cameras using the ARRIRAW codec (3.4K). This was upsampled and the film was finished as a 4K Digital Intermediate at the 2.39:1 aspect ratio."

That site is clickbait. Did the press release state it's Native 4K?

This site says the same, that it is from a 4K DI:

http://referencehometheater.com/revi...trahd-blu-ray/

and this one:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...review-4k-uhd/

I don't know who is considered authoritative or not, but there are multiple sources saying this, but I could not find Warner's official press release.

Blu-ray.com's review, Imdb, and these three other sites I found all say it is from a 4K DI. It sure looks like a pattern.

Correct. They are not authoritative. Being a reviewer does not make one authoritative on anything but reviewing movies. I guarantee you every single one of them is using IMDb as a source. Because of that, when I find actual proof, I correct IMDb.

Unfortunately, finding out mastering resolution is tough. Studios do not give out that information freely. I've had some colorists refuse to confirm resolution, even off the record, because some studios consider it a trade secret. So we have to piece it together from whatever actual proof we can find like projection letters, cinematographer interviews, director interviews, fx crew interviews, etc... It is never in a press release unless a studio paid big bucks to do a full remaster and is touting that as a way to sell new discs.

I do hope that Fantastic Beasts actually has a 4k DI. It's very possible since Warner seems to be doing most of its tentpoles in actual 4k. But without an industry source, HD Goofnut is unlikely to put it on this list.

I decided to email Warner Brothers about this (I have way too much free time) and they responded with: why did I want to know? You would think I was asking Coca Cola for the secret recipe.

I told them why I wanted to know and I was told they would look into it, but they were not promising anything.

I was hoping one of the sources I named would be reputable on the subject. Do even the blu-ray.com reviewers themselves rely on Imdb for this information?

What a secretive industry!

See, this is what tickles me about the whole 'reviewer as gospel' thing, and I say this as one of them: it's not like there are any qualifications or tests or industry knowledge (first hand or otherwise) or any other provisions that need to be made before one can throw any old shit out there on a website. Very, very, very few have any kind of insider link to the industry but, to give blu-ray.com its due, Michael Reuben certainly seems to have some sort of access to the inner sanctum at Warners' home video department so you could always hit him up with a PM, see if he'll do any digging for you.

I only had a casual interest in knowing about the digital intermediate for Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, but as it became harder and harder to find this out from a reliable source, I began to enjoy the challenge of it.

I mainly read these reviews for information about PQ, AQ, and the extras; I usually don't care whether or not a reviewer likes a film.

I have spent all the energy on this quest that I intend to, but I will be amused to see if I get an answer to my email to Warner Bros. Even if I do, that probably won't be taken as the gospel, either.

But if they tell you then that's great! I don't see any reason to doubt your report, same if reviewers actually provide the provenance of their sources other than the usual implied reliance on IMDB. When I waffle on about camera formats, lenses, stock etc in my reviews it's usually gleaned from American Cinematographer and such places.

That's a conventional Blu-ray, not a UHD disc.

It was made from a 4K source. It's a regular BD, though.

It's a good thing that they gave it a new 4K master. Maybe we'll see a UHD made from this master released later in the year- it would make a good holiday release, if for nothing else to signal intent to serve a certain catalog demographic which might help to drive hardware sales.
