I noticed on this site people seem to blindly buy any 4k release based on their like/dislike of the movie.
Thats fine. Enjoy the film. But remember that by buying these fake 4k releases, you are feeding the studios the message that this is acceptable behavior and that we suckers will buy anything if they slap a 4k/HDR sticker on the box. Its a 4k format. I expect a 4k transfer. Am i asking too much? I am paying a premium over the 1080p blu ray after all.... I realize it isn't always easy to do a full 4k master. A lot of CGI is done in 2k. A lot of different scenes are filmed with different cameras and a variety of resolutions. Still, if you have 4k footage, or 3k footage, give it to us in a 4k DI, with that 2k CG. Im ok with that. It will still be a real improvement over a standard blu ray. Just dont be lazy, and make one 2k DI transfer then upscale that shit. No. Last edited by AML; 08-19-2017 at 02:48 PM. |

While I won't deny a 4K transfer is always preferable, we also live in a world where Pacific Rim, with it's 2K DI, is often cited as a demo disc, John Wick Chapter 2 is often found in people's top 5 discs, even above the first one's disc despite 1 having a native 4K transfer, while 2 was an upscale, and the Shallows is listed as one of the most detailed discs on the format right now. Granted while John Wick was already a soft movie due to the cinematography and Chapter 2 was prased for the HDR more than the detail (though it was still more detailed than the 1080p by far), same with Pacific Rim, and yes, upscaling quality can vary, but at the same time, it's much more consistent than before, and it's not like you aren't getting any upgrade in detail with an upscale. Anyone who feels ripped off by upscales should first watch Pacific Rim, Lone Survivor, John Wick Chapter 2, The Shallows, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and/or Furious 7, then talk. Actually, that should be a rule for complaining about upscales.

I agree with AML, if people keep buying these fake 4Ks the studios will continue to take advantage of us. If the DIs are less than 4K it should be called 'extended definition' Blu-ray or something like that. The format is 4K and you should GET 4K for your hard earned $$! |

'Alien: Covenant' is in the discussion for the best UHD transfer of the year, and it wasn't even shot at 4K.
People really do put too much thought into the whole digital intermediate aspect of all of this. No one is getting ripped off. A good transfer is a good transfer, regardless of workflow. |

I also frequent the 3D Bluray threads...should I not be in those threads because I watch mostly 2D and UHD? |

I admit that a 2k di can look good. I myself have pacific rim and think it looks great.
But that's besides the point. This is supposed to be a 4k format, not 2k upscale. Would any of you be happy if they sold blu rays that were upscaled DVD's? Would you be saying the same thing you say about 4k? "oh its ok because it still looks pretty good, its a great 480p transfer" Hell no. You would all be royally pissed. Why? because the difference would be far more noticeable. The only reason people on here don't seem to care is because blu rays already look good at 1080p on most set ups. So an upscaled blu ray looks even better. So no one cares as long as it looks good. But as I said, that's besides the point. We cant allow the studios to get lazy and give us mediocrity. Otherwise that's all they will ever give us. Demand a proper transfer. Disc based formats are dying out. And they are just looking to cut costs. Thats all it is. |
