I would like to pose a question(s) for Goofnut, Pieter V, Geoff D, Penton, and other scholarly persons re: the Digital Intermediate resolution of Black Panther, Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and any or all other MCU movies to date (that might be in question).
The Blu-ray.com database and IMDB (don't shoot ME) have some 4K resolution settings for these 3 movies that I don't believe (due to 1000's vfx shots and or 3-D releases). I already searched this thread about Panther, and am not convinced the 4K decision was proven. How did you all agree that Panther got to be on this list, and is there definitive info about Widow and Shang-Chi that keeps them off this list? I will be on a mission to rectify the Blu-ray.com entries if there's "proofs" on what is what on the D.I. resolutions in question. Using this thread as my evidence to the MODS or developers on why something is not correct. Thanks, I think. |

What I do know is that things have changed over the past few years when it comes to Marvel post production. Most of their DIs up through Captain Marvel were done by roughly the same team at Technicolor under colorist Steve Scott. Black Panther was still at Technicolor, but a different lead colorist, Maxine Gervais. And I believe this is the only Marvel film she's done, and the only one not done by Steve up until this point. So it's definitely possible that she did things differently than the other films. Around this time, Technicolor started having financial troubles. (Recently, they sold their whole Post division to Picture Shop.) The main Marvel team went over to Company 3. And that's where Marvel stuff has been done since Infinity War/Endgame. Although, since Black Widow, Jill Bogdanowicz has replaced Steve as the lead colorist of the Marvel team there. In any case, it's possible they've finally committed to a 4k pipeline since moving to Company 3, or maybe because of the shift to Disney+. I don't know. And I've seen no definitive proof yet. Pieter's the guy who usually finds the DCP info on stuff. Although I don't know if he's found any recent Marvel ones. I don't know if the Marvel stuff released this year had 2k or 4k DCPs. So there's no other proof unless a behind the scenes article comes out mentioning it. AFAIK, the BD database is based on IMDb, which is not authoritative. Anyone can edit it. I've made edits occasionally in the past. And I'll say that for a lot of blockbuster movies, the default seems to be that they put in 4k when the page is first created (I'm not sure if someone is confusing shot in 4k vs. mastered in 4k, or they are just very optimistic there), and it is only later changed to 2k if proven to be so. Since DCP info isn't as readily available as it was in the past, sometimes it never gets changed. That's what I think is going on with the 2021 Marvel slate. My rule is that everything is 2k unless proven otherwise, but IMDb doesn't have that rule. I really hope they have moved to a 4k pipeline for all the Marvel stuff moving forward, but as of yet, I don't know if they have. |

The D+ Marvel shows have all been 4K to my eyes, it's just so much easier to streamline the workflow when you're basically creating one main deliverable (4K DV) and everything else is creamed off from that. This is why most (though not all) streamers have been creating 4K and higher content for fookin years while movies are still routinely cranked out at 2K.
This article doesn't mention the finishing resolution but it's a fascinating look at what went into the HDR creation of Wandavision: https://postperspective.com/color-an...s-wandavision/ As for dat Panther, I can only think that the massive amount of VFX is why most of it looks like an upscale despite the apparent 4K finish. |

Mulan (2020) no MCU was another 2K finish. Black Panther (2018) is proven as 4K. Also Paramount is not outputting much 4K DCPs. Few recent examples are Gemini Man (2019) and The Rhythm Section (2020). Even MI: Fallout (2018) didn't get a 4K DCP, unless the 4K finish. So it's not always easy to get confirms. ----------------------- I still have my doubts on V for Vendetta (2006). The OCN scan press release mention could be a copy and paste error. Warner Bros have done this so many times. Especially on HDR types. Park Circus still does not have a 4K DCP either, where other WB movies quickly got one. And LotR: Fellowship (2001) could be marked as a "native" for this list. The others are straight DI upscales. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=9473 |
