1080p = 2K, not 1K.

1920x1080 compared to 2048x1080 or 1998x1080.

1080p is slightly below 2k but you are correct

Thanks.
That was bugging me but I didn't research before writing my previous post. For some reason, I was convinced 2K DI-s had to be way superior to blu-ray resolution, but they're really not.

I have looked it up, 2K DI work is done at 2048x1556 resolution, apparently. I'm kind of shocked that movies that are going to be projected in movie theaters are finished at such "low" resolution.

So does this make the case for the inadequacy of movies from the past 10 years for UHD even stronger, then? (and of course they make the complete line-up of the first batch of released titles)
Are we relying on studios going back to the original camera files (whenever cameras with superior resolutions were used) and substituting every shot they can to have a satisfactory 4K experience? Why would they start doing so much work for home-video releases?

Which brings me to a question: all Sony releases have 4K masters, but does that mean they did all that hard work when needed? I guess it does. But whenever 2.8k cameras were used, it still is an uprez after all, right?

Oh well, I guess I'm just too pessimistic.

Default Proof in the Pudding is coming.

There has been a lot of talk on the new 4K BluRays coming especially the ones coming with a 2K DI. I have preordered the Samsung 4K player and a couple of 4K BluRays. I am anxious to see just how good this new medium will actually look and sound on my 4K system. I am hoping there will be critical reviews of the players and the discs by experts and so we can judge which models and BluRays we should even bother investing in. Should be an interesting March.

Trust me, you do not want to read them if you are excited.

Same here. What disappoints me is there are already 4K streams out there of content that will likely never be put on disc, I am stuck buying Blu 1080P.

I am going to pre-order the "Journey to Space" 4K BluRay when it becomes available. Does anyone know (being a 4K BluRay from an IMAX source) what will be the aspect ratio on a 16:9 UHD TV screen?

I don't know, but if I had to guess they'll probably crop the 1.44 original to 1.78 so it fills a 16:9 screen.

Thats how every IMAX bluray has been so far with the exception of the scenes from DK and DKR on the bonus disc in 4:3.

Yes, hence the guesstimate that Journey Into Spaaaaaace will be mastered the same way.

I've been trying to find the technical details for Journey to Space. Was it filmed in 15/70mm?

I have read most of this thread. I do have a couple questions on how you guys categorize Real 4K...

According to this article Sony Exec Chris Cookson said the SFX for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (and I assume others) were rendered in 2K. While I have no doubt they will go back in and work their magic on it the final result is not REAL 4K but a very near representation of 4K.

How stingy with all parts of the movies are you qualifying?

On my site I have listed ASM2 as 'Nearly' 4K. For me to call a movie 'Real 4K' the source must be 4K or a 35mm scan, the mastering must be done at 4K and if it is an effects driven movie the SFX need to be rendered in 4K. (ie Amazing Spider-Man 2 is an SFX driven movie while Netflix's Daredevil has minimal CG, so it gets a pass.)

What are your guys thoughts?

What's going to be interesting will be the films such as Tron Legacy where the source format is digital at 1080p.

Should we add The Revenant here? Even though there's no pre-order link available, the box art is up and the movie is in 4K.

No, there isn't an announcement (yet). That database is a future proof entry. Artwork is photoshopped.
