I agree that it would be useful to know which movies render their fx at 2k then upscale to 4k, vs. which movies actually render their fx at 4k (or above). But I also agree that the information about fx rendering resolution is very hard to find.

While 4k DI's are already rare, 4k DI's that actually render their fx at 4k are practically unicorns. I've been trying to keep track of any feature films that mention rendering at 4k and above, and I can only find a handful or two... ever. None of which are available or even announced for UHD BD at the moment.

The industry standard for a 4k DI right now seems to include upscaled 2k fx. That is why the Martian is on this list. Hopefully that will change in the future when all movies get all assets created natively at 4k or above. But who knows when that will happen?

It is safe to assume that any 4k movie you are watching right now is not "true" 4k through and through unless it has no digital fx or only in-camera practical fx.

Yes, that is what we want, a list of true 4K, even if it is small. I can't wait for some of these 70MM films to get released.

Even IMAX usually goes with 6K res for effects and titles, so we can pretty safely assume any of the IMAX titles are going to be true 4K.

And that's not even a frickin' movie! Whoever said that the TV side of things is surging ahead with proper 4K finishes wasn't wrong.

Also, I agree with puddy's post above. People are doing this hand-wringing over whether Martian should be on the list because it's got upscaled elements, but theatrical 4K releases with true 4K (or up) VFX really are "rare birds" so folks need to chill. At this point in UHD's life it's more the end-to-end 2K upscales that this list is there to weed out, so if something is rebuilt to include actual 4K elements in amongst 2K material and is ultimately finished at 4K then it fully deserves to be on this list because it's no different from the vast majority of actual 4K finishes.

Funny how people want all these demands and sub lists when they aren't the ones nice enough to even be keeping a list for us...

Just grateful that HD Goofnut created and maintains this thread. It is nice the mods made it a "sticky".

Always admired folks that donated their time to provide info to the community.

I see both *sides* of the coin, so to speak.

Goofy’s UHD Blu-ray list seems to be evolving in a satisfactory fashion and his and L'armée’s traditional Blu-ray lists seem the best available compilations on that topic on the world wide web…..something I’ve stated repeatedly in past years on the '4K Movies Releases' thread (which essentially is the DNA of their interests) in order to congratulate them for their formalized service and give them more exposure.

Why such good List Makers?.... because of their accounting prowess and especially because of the quality of their (the Lists’) informed contributors. That’s not to say however that there is always room for improvement or occasional self evaluation of the listing criteria.

If I started one, how many of us would complain there are now 2 lists?

I was originally in this discussion suggesting we sticky this list and I appreciate the work of those involved with its maintenance, and know it takes time and effort.

"Lists and opinions are the opiate of free audio video forums". I think someone famous once said that.

Wasn't it shot on the Alexa 65 for a 4k finish?

BvS? Are you kidding? Snyder's a big film guy. Shot on 35mm anamorphic and 65mm IMAX in the main, with various digital sources for inserts, aerials and so on.

I thought I had read it was shot in 35mm, digital, 5perf 65mm and 15/70 IMAX film stock - so other than the digital footage - it's pretty much good to go.
