The rest of the movie including the 35mm negative was scanned @2K, 2 hours of the movie

I think maybe I'm mixing it up with the next Star Wars or something?

Both are shot on film. Snyder did MoS on 35 as well.

I think you're confusing one big superhero smackdown for another: Civil War has been partially shot on the Alexa 65 and apparently the whole of Infinity War will be shot on the 65 (or the IMAX-ised version of it, for all the difference that'll make).

You're not far off re: Star Wars though, Rogue One has apparently made use of the 65 and also the 2.76 Ultra Panavison lenses that were refurbished for Hateful 8.

I just hope we start seeing some CG/VFX done in 4K for some of these tentpole releases. I get that 4K renders are a big investment and smaller movies can't afford the time and money to splurge. But, it would be best for the industry to at least get a few big ones out there.

There will be so many VFX shots in Infinity War they might as well shoot it with an iPhone if they do 2K CG and a 2K DI. Marvel has yet to release a movie with a 4K DI. Even 'Age of Ultron', which was filmed in 3.4K-5K used a 2K DI, pity.

As long as 3D still casts its shadow (or stays out of the 4K arena) then you'll still see a heck of a lot of 2K VFX in modern blockbusters. It really is no coincidence that one of the very few recent movies with 4K VFX was NOT finished in 3D.

I guess it's safe to say upcoming 3D movies are 99% in 2K.
The only "recent" 3D movies that also comes with a 2D 4K are Mockingjay Pt. 1&2, The Smurfs 2, MiB3 & TASM 1&2

“The render time is obviously greater [in 4K],” Cookson said. “Working on a budget, people make that compromise.…http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...-spider-445951

2K vfx plates were upsampled to 4K.

The vfx folk have been struggling against what some would call a collusive cartel of Hollywood studios for a long time…. https://pando.com/2014/12/02/new-cou...ation-studios/

I imagine producers could save more money by instead of sending out the vfx work to Vancouver or India, one could have it done in North Korea.
