It's no coincidence that the best hdr movies I've seen so far have come from the 4k DI movies, with kingsman and life of pi following closely, but technically they are upscaled and not 1080p pixels. (The hdr grading is applied to 4k pixels in studio whether native or not, according to the fox PR guy)
In the absence of any 1080p UHD discs to properly test our viewpoints we're both flying blind, but I still think that there'd be a minimal difference between the same 2K source upscaled for UHD or presented in 1080p, just as long as both were in 10-bit WCG with HDR. Indeed, the entire point of using all three of those features is that they are independent of source/display resolution, and there have been some 2K Dolby Vision DCPs too IIRC. Having all that good stuff tied in to extra spatial res is practically a bonus at this stage.

Yeah, Fox do what they do re: upscaling for HDR grading and that's fine, all the studios who've released UHDs so far have made it quite obvious that the content on these discs must be in 2160p by hook or by crook - they've got a format to sell so putting out native 1080p res ain't gonna be a great PR move. But I think you'd be surprised at how good a 1080p UHD HEVC-encoded disc would look, and TBH you need to check what your Samsung player is kicking out when you switch to 1080p, I'll bet cash money that it's 8-bit SDR 709 which makes such comparisons to a native 1080p UHD disc worthless (hence my first point above).

HDR10 is a 10-bit HDR colorspace. There are also 12- and 16-bit HDR colorspaces.

On UHD Blu-ray, yes. When Dolby Vision discs become available, they will be re-creating a 12-bit colorspace.

Does that mean having to buy newer TV models or will they offer firmware updates?

It means having to buy newer TV models because you need to have a 12-bit-capable panel.

And to add to the pain, by the time DolbyVision sets are available, there will be few to no manufacturers still making 3D sets. So, in a year or two, we could have sets that are really spectacular for both 3D and HDR, but... we'll probably just have the latter, instead.

I am surprised they kept the 3D feature in the UHD Samsung player even

To be honest, and since I can accurately cal my display for 3D and not for UHD/HDR, after watching The Martian both ways, I take the 3D version...

I believe you. 3D 1080 on a display like yours (OLED) is hard to beat

Neat. I tried it two times, I don't think my cat like it.

That will not bother me as I can't stand 3D. I hate wearing the glasses and it feels like I'm looking through a tube with the glasses frame. I'll take the extra detail and be more than happy. That being said I find it hard watching movies on my 80" 1080p Sharp as it feels too small compared to my FP JVC on a 148" cinemascope screen. It feels so much more immersive and makes the experience feel like going to the theater. I don't seem to come across very many people that even like home 3D except for the few I see on AVS.

that is not so; Dolby Vision (dynamic metadata) even 'works' with HD rec.709 (8-bit) displays (offering 'improved' picture quality), this is one of the 'major benefits' of Dolby Vision

i 'highly recommend' further research by 'anyone' wishing to be 'accurate' with regards to Dolby Vision and it's 'many benefits'

I watched both Spiderman2 and Xmen UHD and I was much more impressed with XMen even though it was not native 4K like SpiderMan2

I hope you can at least understand the frustration of those of us who do like 3D.

Ah! That's very good to know- thank you for the better researched info.

Please pardon my spouting of inaccuracies, everyone!

Hey guys,

10 Cloverfield lane was released in Australia the other day on Blu-Ray, but no 4K.

Are they not releasing every movie on 4K?

No. Besides, it's Paramount. They're only just getting into the UHD game. They just released their first two titles in the US.
