Ahhh, okay.

Sorry, I'm pretty new to the 4K side of things

I've only just recently updated all by DVD's to Blu-Rays & decided to get the XB S & get a 4K TV, but was just wondering why they aren't releasing new releases as - DVD, Blu & 4K.

Sorry If I'm taking it off-topic =\

Does anyone has any idea about the bluray region code which come along with the UHD bluray? I would like to import some UHD bluray, but atm i do not have 4k TV, so i will watch the standard bluray for a while. Will the standard bluray be region free like UHD or will be locked region as usual?

Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness should NOT be on this list. Neither have a 4K DI!

IMDb is not a valid source. Paramount had a press release that said the new series was remastered at 4K.
On the other hand, all the VFX are rendered in 2K, and there is a lot of VFX in those movies.
It's one of those films where the live action is 4K but anything touched by CG is 2K.

--- EDIT---
Well it turns out that it is just a 2K upscale. Shame on you Paramount.

Opips3, while I am a member of your fan club, I trust Bill Hunt more on this one.

" I’ve now confirmed with the studio that the film was finished as a 2K DI, which was up-sampled to 4K and given an HDR color timing pass for this Ultra HD release."

RealorFake4K, you run a website specifically about this subject so you should know better. When they say "have been digitally remastered with new 4K UHD transfers" in the press release that is double speak for "we upscaled the sh*t out of the 2K DI".

I just watched the first one and it's definitely a 2K master. Beautiful and HDR, but nonetheless a 2K master.

Well, I stand corrected. I am usually pretty skeptical about those things too. After re-reading it and your exactly right 'digitally remastered'. That really surprises me, those movies are so slick I just glossed over it thinking "JJ knows what he is doing!".

I've already updated my site, thanks!

I thought part 1 was disappointing resolution wise. Grainy and not a clean sharpness. Part 2 blows it away, not only with the imax scenes but also the widescreen shots look much better.

I hate it when I see that overly grainy picture and yet some go "That looks so sharp!"

HD Goofnut,

Given the confirmation by Bill Hunt that these were just upscaled 2k DI's and not remastered in the same way as The Martian, the Star Treks should be removed from this list.

I agree. No way they are rebuilding 2K DI films, using 35mm film elements & RAW. Just costs too much and easier to upscale the 2K DI and throw with marketing terms.

Especially in the case of The Martian so close to the new 4K UHD format, they could have made a 4K master right away.

The standard DCP was 2K only, but the Dolby Vision version was 4K

4K with CGI upscaled from 2K renders, that is.
