Hello everyone, I've recently decided to make the jump to UHD and I'm currently looking into which TV, UHD player etc to purchase.
I came across this amazing thread (will be visiting this a lot to decide which films to get ) and was surprised to learn 2K DI still being widely used in Hollywood even on big expensive productions.

So this got me curious. Does anyone know why the Hollywood studios are still being so partial to 2K as mastering resolution in this day and age?

I realise two contributing factors might be that most digital projectors in theaters are still only 2K and that rendering CGI and digital effects at 4K is potentially more time consuming and expensive, but surely with 4K being the future and having been the decided standard for the past couple of years the studios are simply shooting themselves in the foot? In order for 4K streaming and UHD Blu-rays to gain popularity as a format then surely sufficient content which is actually 4K is needed? (and I assume, like with Blu-ray, some of the bigger studios are backing UHD Blu-ray as distribution formats? e.g. Sony? So why not create more real 4K content from 4K masters?)

So does anyone here have any insight as to why exactly 4K is not more widely adopted for mastering big Hollywood films?

It's for the very reasons you state. It's more expensive, more time-consuming especially if there's CGI to be rendered at 4K (some movies will have it rendered at 2K or 3K but the final master at 4K). Most projectors are 2K, and a 2K film upscaled to 4K can look great even at the cinema if the source elements were already high resolution.

The studios don't need "true" 4K content to promote 4K. It's destined to be a niche format, and if people don't do the research they'll never know something they buy as 4K is actually upscaled 2K. I just watched The Shallows and the resolution upgrade is slight but it still looks better than 1080p and the high dynamic range is the real reason to buy it. For many HDR is the reason they're buying 4K discs, not the promised resolution. Hollywood knows that which is why they make a bigger deal about HDR in their ads over the resolution.

yep and this is why every single blu ray has the HDR sticker slapped on the front of it! HDR is the big difference not resolution

Many seem annoyed by eye-toching HDR, and that is why they are going with the Oppo 203, which allows you to strip HDR and watch in wide gamut REC2020 10-bit SDR.

I was aware of that article. However I did some extra research on this, it's indeed 2K. ( ) It seems Warner just released a 4K DCP, since they have done a 4K master for home release.

Some of the films on the list have elements below the 4K but those elements have been upscaled to 4K for the 4K DI.

I think HD is only concerned with the DI being 4K
