The term 'DI' is outdated but the name survives. When I remember, I try to use the phrase ‘feature finishing’ or ‘final color’….. http://www.company3.com/services/features/

but, force of habit you know.

And even though they where shot in 4k what where the effects done in.

I know most VFX are done in 2k.

IMO, right or wrong, the term “DI” is here to stay, probably the same for “film shot digital”.

In the early 90's manufactures coming to the production center to show off their new and upcoming gear were using the term “data reduction” for various forms of JPEG and MPEG. The term soon changed to “compression” and is still the most widely used term.

Again, IMO, “data reduction” = correct, “compression” = incorrect. Data reduction can not be data increased (data recovered), i.e., MPEG, MP3. Data compression can be decompressed, i.e., ZIP, FLAC, etc.

That's why they added the term "lossy". Lossy compression MPEG, lossless ZIP, FLAC, etc.

Indeed. Even if the 'digital' part is redundant, it's still very much an 'intermediate' in the true sense of the word IMO because there's often a big difference between what's shot (regardless of the taking format) and what we actually end up seeing, not just for integrating VFX but for the framing, grading etc which is manipulated up the wazoo these days. Maybe calling it a DI isn't quite so apt for something like Hateful Eight where it's basically the timed positive record laid down onto digital with as little digital manipulation as possible (as revealed by Penton, and Nolan does something very similar for his movies) but for the most part that term doesn't bother me.

I know what they did, IMO, it was an attempt to correct a screw-up that had become ingrained by print folks. Same with IN (inverse), if something is inflammable then how can it be flammable. At least there was some attempt to correct this miss use term.

Some of us tech folks are rigid about tech definitions .

PS: I am very weak on the subject of grammar, still have a hard time with correct and proper use of it.

Sony announces Guns of Navarone and Bridge on the River Kwai that are 4K sourced;

Shout has announced IMAX discs (no official word on 4K scans but can only assume they wouldn't go through hassle of scanning 15/70 at 2K and upres)

Well, it's still partially accurate.
It's data reduction *and* compression of the remaining data.

I just hate that Fox is releasing so many UHD titles that did not receive 4K DIs.

These discs are sold for HDR, not for the resolution bump.... That's a bonus (if possibile)

But how much improvement does high dynamic range really improve the image with almost no resolution bump whatsoever? I haven't had a chance to compare them side by side

Nobody can know right now, as nobody has seen these discs on a HDR 4K display....

I would like to see comparisons too...

Anyway they should stop using 4K on the case: 1) Most are 2K sourced 2) Ultra-HD is 3.8K not 4K....

Right, but what sounds better? 3.8 or 4? Yeah, 4 does. Also, this happens all the time anyway. For example, a 6 TB hard drive is actually 5.45 TBs.

Agreed. The 4K not really being 4K thing doesn't bother me at all. 1.85 4K DCPs are actually 3996x2160, so shall we call them 3.99K while we're at it?
