Blu-ray aren't sold as 2K HD disc....

They were sold as 1080p, now they are changing the direction (vertical to horizontal) to make it seem like it's a huge difference...

True, but some manufacturers still internally refer to it as 2K, it's just that this time the 4K moniker was kicked off by Sony publicly (much to the chagrin of the tech industry who wanted UHD) and it's stuck. There's no getting away from it, so it will give pedants ammunition forever more.

Sorry newb question... will there be a point to buy a 4K movie if it was not mastered in 4K? Will it not look much different than the regular BD?

That is what we've been discussing. No one knows just yet how much HDR will help a title that only boasts a 2K DI versus 4K.

I think it'll look better, can't say how much though. In my opinion, I wouldnt shell out the money to buy a uhd unless it was mastered in 4k. I am happy enough with Blus being upcoverted. For now...

Pendants? I saw the signal in the sky.
1080p is not 2k

That makes sense, guess we won't know for sure for a couple months.

Other than Sony and Fox, and I guess WB is also supposed to be doing stuff too, are the other studios going to support 4K? Have Paramount, Disney or Universal said anything yet?

Not to my knowledge. Sony, Fox, and Warner seem to have the most 4K DIs to work with though.

For all of my waffling about how I'm not gonna get into UHD Blu (if at all) until much later blah blah, if Paramount were to announce a UHD Blu-only remastered 4K Star Trek movie boxset then I'd jump on that in a goddamned microsecond.

Now that everyone's talking about their favorite movies and how they'd jump on it real quick. What do you guys think the chances of movies that bombed in theaters getting a uhd release? I don't think dredd will have much improvement in uhd, since the dirty grimy look is what they intended on. But even then, I'd triple dip if they ever released dredd in uhd. Not likely though...

I still haven't bought the blu set due to quality issues/lack of extended cuts. I would love that.

Another point - Can we get this thread stickied?

Well, Fox are wheeling out Hitman and Fantastic Four real quick like, so you never know, Lionsgate may have Dredd on their launch slate too!

Thanks goofnut! Dunno how I missed this thread but it is something I am very interested in. Could sway my purchasing for a movie I am on the fence about.

No problem. I know I didn't want to purchase a UHD title that only received a 2K master. So, I figured I'd track it myself.

I may still would, but like 3D when I did use it, I had to weigh out "conversions" and the xtra $$$. I was going to try and do a list like this myself, but with a busy December I never got around to it. Trying to use IMDB ahead of time, as stated hear by Geoff, is not very helpful. I am going to pass this list along to some buddies at Satguys as it gets update. Small group over there in there Electronics forum that are 4K fans.

You still writing reviews? Always liked the ones you did at HDJ.

I wish I could still write reviews. With three children and one of them special needs I just don't have the time anymore. I do write little bits and pieces over on Letterboxd occasionally though.

I already see something that will be frustrating. Maze Runner 4K DI, Scorch trials 2K DI...

I'll buy a UHD title from a 2K master IF it's a movie I don't already have or I'm not thrilled about the copy I do have, or its a movie that I really like and would double dip on even a better blu-ray version to begin with.
