Would anyone be interested in starting a thread that keeps track of titles with 4K (or higher) masters and 3K (or higher) VFX.
I know of 'Sully', 'Sicario', 'Power Rangers', and 'Dunkirk' as of now, but would be curious to know if there are other titles available. |

I know those numbers may not mean as much to others, but I've noticed in 'Sully' and 'Power Rangers', that having 4K-VFX or higher, definitely allows the CGI to look significantly less soft. |

What's going on with this thread? It was created two years ago in 2015 and promised to be a list of 4k or higher masters. What a disappointment. I can't seem to trust it.
Unless . . . am I not supposed to trust the reviewers who claim many of these titles are upgraded masters from 2160? Is there a better list of true 4k or higher transfers? |

It was filmed on 35mm and 65mm, yes. But Pieter's lil' list there is relating to the working resolution of the visual effects (VFX) shots that were inserted into Nolan's movies.

1) Jumanji 4K (which is claimed to be made from a 4K, or higher, master . . . says "Resolution: Native 4K (2160p)". But lower down on the same page, the Reviewer says it is "2160p/HDR-enhanced image". Most often I see that a "enhanced image" disk is an upscale. What is it?? 2) Here is the quote from Post #1: Quote:
If the 4K disks are made from 4K masters, why would there be "upscaling or enhancement? |

![]() I have my foot in the door but I'm not fully into 4K and HDR yet, so at the moment, the 4K part is more important to me than the HDR part. So I'm very interested in movies that will be added to this thread... not so interested in UHD releases that are upscales + HDR. |

A lot of folks on this forum will argue that you are "missing out" on great releases, or "HDR is a bigger improvement than just the resolution", and on some level they are right, but on another level, those are just opinions, and in the end besides the point. Studios are releasing 2k upscale transfers on a 4k format. In my book this is false advertising. You can excuse it or explain it, but the bottom line is, thats what they are doing. Blame the 2k CG rendering, blame the use of 2k cameras, but if thats the case, just DONT release these movies in 4k. Give us a good 2k BD transfer and leave it at that. No reason you cant give standard blu rays HDR, right? Or is there some technical limitation im not aware of? Hopefully as CG rendering in 4k becomes more prevalent, we will start to get 4k transfers. Till then, we have a huge catalog of older, 35mm/70mm film releases that are getting amazing 4k transfers. Some are even re-rendering CG in 4k (when its minimal use) But dont expect CG extravaganzas like Guardians of the galaxy, to get re-rendered. |

EDIT: Hell, UHD BD isn't even an entirely new format, it's still based of BD, but improved with double storage. |
