Sorry if this has already been covered. Wondering about The Martian (which would apply to the extended as well).
The review on this site says: "...was photographed in 5K but finished on a 2K digital intermediate, which means it's been down-scaled from its source resolution in post production. What does that mean for its 4K release? It's been upscaled back to 4K..." Is that correct? |

It was recompiled from 6k and 4k footage combined with 2k uprezzed to 4k digital SFX for a new 4k master for archival purposes. Ridley insisted. The UHD Bluray's are sourced from this new 4k master. The director's edition has both cuts plus its Dolby Atmos mix that was left off the first release. It was only 2k theatrically. |

Seeking clarification on another title, reason why Starship Troopers isn't in this thread?
Basically, I view this thread as a great list of top upgrade choices, and I'm sure others here would view this thread the same way: "What are the highest quality UHDs on the basis of PQ resolution?" At this point, I don't want to upgrade to UHDs that are 2K upscales. Obviously fully 4K+ masters are the ideal, however, I'd also be willing to consider titles that are somewhere in between. There might be some really fantastic UHDs that were very close but just didn't make the cut because maybe the effects were finished at 3K while everything else was 4K - random example, I don't know if that happens or not. In other words, definitely not just a 2K upscale, but not quite fully 4K. It would be great to have some type of addendum to the list that would cover those type of situations. Almost but not quite. Didn't make the cut on a technicality. Etc. |

You’re contributing to it being more than a list. Go find one of the 80 other 2K vs 4K DI threads to clutter with your opinions. |

Is there a list of all UHD with 1:85:1 ratio? Just watched zero dark thirty, I wish every movie was in this aspect ratio.

In all seriousness, It all depends on the kind of framing composition the filmmakers are going for. The wider ratios are more epic. |

Usually I agree with this, but there are exceptions. I can't imagine Spielberg's War of the Worlds or Saving Private Ryan in 2.39:1. More height was needed for the machines in WOTW. It was also needed for about every battle scene in SPR.
