Simplistically, region codes are codes attributed to media (DVDs, Blu Ray, etc.) and players of said media (DVD players, etc.) It's a way of knowing where in the world those things come from -- Regions A to C. Different countries are attributed different regions, it breaks down like this.

Your player's going to work wherever you are. Granted with power differences you might need to run it through a transformer or however that works these days, but appliances will pretty much work anywhere. The movies you carry with you will as well.

DVDs are marked by region code, so if you move and buy a DVD from the new area you live in, it won't work. You'd need a player capable of playing multiple regions in order to get it to play properly. However, Blu rays are unique in that many of them are region free, meaning they will play in any player, anywhere in the world. Depending on the studio putting out the BD, chances of it being region free will either go up or down (none of Fox's are, all of Warner's are and so forth).

That's pretty much what you'd need to know. There's a lot to region codes with marketing and whatnot (I'm sure), but this should be the short man's version, and why you'd care.

Does anyone know if Fox's version of The Fountain from the UK is region free? I highly doubt it since it's Fox, but I can't seem to find the info anywhere.

Could region codes be considered as discriminatory and also facilitating anti competitive behaviour?

region coding existed for dvds and was far worse since there is like what 7-8 regions while blu ray has only three regions and the majority of releases are region free.

That's how Australia ruled, but as a rule no, simply because the rights are sold by territory. There can't be any competition because they don't own the copyright

I did search on Australian position on region coding.

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), there is an attempt to use copyright laws for a purpose related to areas beyond their real purpose. This coding system is a mechanism to allow price discrimination, not to protect the inherent rights of Intellectual Property owners.

This is the view of the commissioner.

It is a possibility that this "view" could be tested in any country.

It is promising that more and more titles are released without region restrictions. This is very good. Hope that Fox would change their mind on this. I know that studios give commercial reasons for region coding but I am not convinced, so as the ACCC.

When more titles are released without region restrictions, the camp that supports region coding may not have much ground to stand. Very good .....

I actually don't know how I missed that. I even looked on that site and didn't see it listed! Weird...

The WB release has some pretty poor picture quality from the HD DVD port, along with a regular Dolby track where the Fox version has DTS-HDMA and uses a dual layered disc if I am not mistaken. So I figure there has to be some improvement there.
