Is that release meant to be available for everyone or is it still meant for, in that case, US only?

Or do they want to "restrict" the release by not making everything on the disc playable for everyone?
Cause, it just seems kind of silly if they'd make it Region Free, but it doesn't (always) work in every region.

Also, would it depend on the player if those NTSC-parts would play or not over here?
If there are any that is, does that happen much actually or is that fairly unknown?
But I'd probably go with a better known brand of player,
only, would those have more change to play NTSC or less or doesn't it matter?

Thanks for the info,
Disney and Fox region-lock their titles (when they do) to restrict access in countries where the title in question may not have been released, or was released in an alternate form (censorship cuts, dubbing, etc). Several studios have realized the ignorance of this and have given up the practice or have minimized it to new releases, but Disney and Fox still region-lock frequently.

As for NTSC and PAL extras, the vast majority of PAL TVs can play NTSC format video, it is only the opposite, trying to play PAL format video on an NTSC TV, that will not work. Hence NTSC extras frequently appear on import BDs of American films, even if the import comes from a PAL country. NTSC TV owners must buy a converter box or a special PAL/NTSC TV to watch PAL format extras on a Blu-ray or DVD.

Oooh, so it depends on the display-device and not the player? Or both?
In that case, I'm not sure about the TV, but since I have a little home-theater with a projector,
I believe it is able to work with both.

So eh, if I understand correctly, most extras are simply in NTSC-format anyway, no matter where.

There is the French version of Taken, but it is Region B locked and has forced French Subs. UK is Region B+C. I don't believe there will be any Region Free versions so you will have to wait for a Region A version.

FORCED?! That's ridiculous for this day and age.
It's still putting text over a movie you know, some people do not like that.
Of course this is not aimed at the poster, but the fact angers me.

Now, I'm not French though, but I'd hate to run into a home-video where the subtitles are fixed.
And I mean, especially today, with Blu-rays, it was already not necessary with DVDs.
I can see the same happen in The Netherlands with Dutch subtitles.
I know it was the case all the time with VHS, but I don't need them anymore now.
If anything, I'd set it to English, cause it's silly to read for example Dutch when they're speaking English.
And if it's a language I don't understand about a word of, also English.
Maybe Dutch for the heck of it... if available... :P

The thing is, don't you just hate they do these weird things with technologies that can do better?
Like, they'd stuff 3 audio-languages/types on a DVD while they knéw it would fill up quickly and degrade qualities.
I'm sure glad that would be over now there is a lót more space, they better use it!

That's even weirder...
You guys can... you know... understand English (even if American) speech right?...
And I doubt a deaf person would be too blind to press the subtitle-button.

I wonder who actually programs these home-videos.
They must never come out to see the light of day. XD

Forced subtitles are sometimes part of the distribution agreement. So it's actually the larger English language distributors who insist on subtitles on non-English releases. It helps them discourage imports, so gain more sales for themselves.

Do you really think the French distributor of Taken is unaware of the potential benefits to their sales if they didn't have forced subs?

Question

I guess this is the best thread to ask this, as it's about multiple regions:

I just looked up which versions of '300' there are or will be.
Now I'm interested in the special edition.
But I see it was only released in Japan in February and apparently it will be released in the US this year.

Now, the weird thing is that they're both described as Region A.
First of all, what is Region C going to do with Region A discs, besides playing them on Region Free players?
And second, why isn't there a different region coming out or can we still expect that?

Note: I live in Region B and probably won't have a Region Free player when I get one.

I have the press-sheet and it is not announced as region-locked. But I don't have a screener to confirm.
