Totally agreed. Viewing 1080p BD material at 2.5-3x PH or 1x screen width (scope system) is an engrossing, immersive experience, even with screens bigger than 100". My first row is 10' from a 120" wide 2.40:1 screen, and neither myself, my wife, or many guests have felt it to be too large. I could probably sit at 8' and still feel that the image comfortably fills my field of view.

Many owners of scope front projection systems at AVS >100" (in some cases, much bigger than 100") report similar experiences at these distances.

I think Deci actually sits even closer than this for scope material. something like 1.5-2x PH IIRC.

Max-- try a bigger screen sometime. I would bet that you'd like it.

Jeff, that’s for you and Bill Hunt to hammer home to WB (behind closed doors if you desire a successful outcome without antagonizing them ) on the other hand, I guess you could of course try the same futile internet campaign as this dude started back in 2003 with the same results…………….

We've got something in the works we hope will be productive for everyone. There's a lot of great people working at WB, it's just a matter of convincing the top to change the company policy. This is a prime example and one of the things we're going to bring up. Perhaps fresh eyes and new faces over at WB will have a more desireable outcome.

All I can say is that if I were you (or anyone else who is reading) if you have the opportunity to see true IMAX capture (not a 35mm. blow-up) exhibited in a real IMAX theater, then I would take advantage of that opportunity (like those did for The Dark Knight) because I don’t know how long such presentations for feature films (or even documentaries) will last into the future as it’s called the “motion picture business” for a reason, and not “motion picture art”.

I finally purchased a new HDTV (Sony KDL-46W4100) this past Wednesday while it was on sale at Circuit City, which is an improvement over my old TV in EVERY way (size, resolution, general PQ, etc). I've been watching a few minutes here and there of some of my Blu-ray collection, and I'm finding movies I didn't think looked that good to be better, and movies that I thought to look good, look even better. Unfortunately, I'm finding myself disappointed at some of the content received via my antenna, content via DirecTV, and of course, "upconverted DVD". I was just thinking about that chart earlier this week and hadn't gotten around to looking it up yet.

P.S.: Thanks for the information regarding "Fireproof", "Facing The Giants", the Panasonic Varicam AJ-HDC27V/DVCPRO HD (720/60P) Penton, and thanks for the information regarding my upconverting question Jeff!

P.S.S.: I took advantage of one of these Blu-ray player sales going on to spread the "Blu love" (no, that's not a venereal disease) this Christmas. Should be a good year for Blu-ray!

Well, WB plans on rereleasing the film in IMAX theaters in Dec./Jan. to help for award consideration along with (as I think some people already know here) for the first-time providing Academy membership with the option of Blu-ray screeners for those who prefer to view in the comfort of their homes.

Speaking of the above, I know that Guild members read this thread so here’s a head’s-up for Tues. evening (12/9) in L.A., if some of you guys and gals haven’t seen it since, you’ve been too busy with your noses to the grindstones. (Plus, I’m linking this just because I love listening to the musical score as background music while I’m checking my e-mails).

I have a JVC RS2 (pro version of the HD100) and I've seen the JVC 4K your eluding to with 4K material as well. Breathtaking but it also costs about $175,000 or so where the RS2 set me back around $6K. Meridian has a nice modified 4K beast as well.

I'm sure this stuff will eventually trickle down but with such a small percentage of the market really able to take advantage of the added resolution (whether they realize it or not) and no 4K content available for consumers, I think it will be awhile. But if you meet someone at JVC that wants to find a home for one because they are running out of space, feel free to give them my name!

Also that trailer still gives me goosebumps everytime i watch it, *sighs* oh how i wish i could experience the movie for the first time again

who cares about cost, the reality is we don't have a choice. Yes I could go from 10' to 100" but then I would be getting rid of my big pic. I would love to be able to buy superBD in 4k but I don't have that option. I am happy with BD because if 1080p is not enough then imagine how bad up-scaling DVD was. By the time we have 4k sources the 4k display tech won't be that expensive and up-scaling does not match a native source.

Who would have thought 5 years ago that a 1080p projector would be this cheap, and what are the chances that a 4k source would be available today

PS from Max’s post, I would guess that the 4k source was most likely uncompressed (or lightly compressed and just that vs BD would have a visible difference on a big screen (especially if it was a WB BD)

It's just my opinion though...

If 120" screen requires 4K resolution, how much resolution is needed for a 500" movie theater screen? How much resolution would be needed for a huge IMAX screen.

IMO, blu-ray resolution, is more than sufficient for a large home theater screen, say 140", provided all available resolution is used by the movie without resolution wastage, e.g. due to edge enhancement.

Excellent transfers such as Pirates of the Caribbean, produces a breath taking picture on very large screens, when coupled with a good quality projector and player (e.g. PS3).

D-Cinema is essentially the same resolution as what is on your BD, it is only marginally more resolution @2K.

But Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-cinema says that there are some cinemas using Sony's CineAlta 4K digital projector. There's other differences too like bitrate and colour depth.
