Guys, as I stated on Monday, I’m on vacation this week (and actually most of the next) as we’re trying to beat the Spring break crowd to all the nice places to visit before the drunken orgies begin.

Again, don’t read anything into my absence. I’ll try to drop in, if I can, intermittently.
Later.

If you’re not looper, Yogi Berra will send you a pat on the fanny for your effort and you’ve got a big tip of the cap from me too.
Just a fan of his since 2001 (the movie).

Silent Running was a good one.

Too bad Brainstorm killed his career.

Enjoy your vacation.

BTW: What's a looper?

I believe that New Line will remain as their own production and distribution entity, so we should still have DTS-HD Master Audio.

Great!

I'll be quite happy to have a dts HD-MA track for Dark City: Director's Cut along with the long-rumored (confirmed but MIA) new Roger Ebert commentary track for the forthcoming 2006 Director's cut he mentioned on his web site back in 2005.

I'd pay at least a latte' to know when it was coming down the Blu-pipe.

I thought that the BD (as well as DVD) aspect would be taken over by Warner Home Video? The whole point was to reduce costs by eliminating duplicative functions, wasn't it?

What exactly does "yield rate" mean with respect to Blu-Ray Discs?

In other words, if the yield rate is 80%, what does that mean?

I have been assuming that is how many discs are manufactured without flaws. So an 80% yield rate would mean 20% end up getting junked.

But I've never actually seen this stated, just endless arguments about what the current yield rate percentage for BD-50 is vs. other discs, who said what when, etc.

Thanks.
Yes, 20% of the discs coming out of the machine are flawed. This means that with average daily production of 9000 discs per line (one line-day, I'll call it), you have to throw away 1800 of them, leaving you 7200 usable discs per line-day. If "300" sold 200K copies, that was 28 line-days of production, or over 3 days of production for DADC with their 6 lines (at last count, they're probably increasing that now).
Of course, we assume that there's been improvement, but DADC has been quoting the "around 80%" number now for over a year. Here and here
Double layer DVD yields were around 80% in 2000. Today they're 95% or more. There's no reason to assume BD-50 won't also be able to achieve similar results, with time.

very informative... practice makes perfect. All new technologies have flaws. They're new. Right now, it's all about repeatability.

There are other factors too. One thing we've heard repeatedly is that the yield rates hit the 80s and then DADC and Cinram have focused on cutting cycle time rather than getting yields up any further. Diminishing returns and all that. So the net movement over the past quarters has reportedly been more total good discs *and* more coasters coming off the same lines.

~80% yields are good or 'science fiction,' don't you think?

how do they determine if the disc is flawed? do they inspect every disc bit-by-bit? do they do a sampling and throw out a batch?

There is some kind of scanner, I don't know how it works, but if I had to guess it performs spot checks in such a manner that if there's an error it's likely to hit it

I received a few PM’s from inquiring minds asking me to elaborate on the StEM material I spoke about a few pages back.

In that regard, the StEM (movie short) was a collaborative effort between American Society of Cinematographers and DCI. More than two hours of film were captured in 35mm (and to be completely accurate, a small amount in 65 mm also) by a world-class team of ASC cinematographers. The footage featured a bunch of scenes with a variety of lighting conditions, colors, textures and other variables of photographic definition including rain, confetti, fog, smoke, etc. The footage accumulated was intentionally made to stress the system (i.e. theatrical presentation of the imagery). It was edited down to a mini-movie consisting mostly of 35mm original source and a little bit of 65mm. Eastman negative 5218 (think Van Helsing) was the primary stock and 5245 was used for the shot tilting down from the sky.

The location was Uni’s “European Village" backlot with a wedding scene (b.t.w., the groom in a tuxedo and the bride in a wedding gown is a great way to test blacks and whites) set-up similar to the one in The Godfather. The StEM material also includes some 4k CGI from Disney’s Treasure Planet.

I don’t see my post responding to that goof-ball thread that was linked here from one of those *fringe forums* where they continue to fight the high-def format war in their own zombie-fied way.

I hope that you or one of the other mods at least moved my *rebuttal* to one of our member’s only threads, as it took a good 4-5 min. for me to type up the darn thing!

Me, personally?

First of all, all kidding aside, I am indeed a happily married man who has remained faithful to his partner for life for over 20 years of marriage.

Secondly, I don’t want to ever end up like that John Bobbitt character.
