Interesting week of SPHE Blu-ray viewings. As I mentioned before I watched Drive last week and thought it looked spectacular. A few days later we finally watched Columbiana and again, spectacular transfer. So this weekend we finally watched Priest. I have the 3D Blu-ray release, but we watched it in 2D as I don't have a 3D PJ installed at the moment. I imagine most of the issues I saw had to do with production but I saw a lot of digital artifacts around the actors in certain scenes. It didn't look like compression or ringing, merely a weird "blob" of sorts that was subtle (I bet most wouldn't even see it). I imagine it has to do with the layering of VFX around and in the backgrounds, or simply all of the color and contrast changes seen in the backgrounds. But I saw it more than I think I should. I'm also not a fan of the HUGE changes in overall resolution and color timing that can happen from moment to moment. Even my wife commented on it. One moment detail would be good but not great, the next it would be razor sharp and impeccable. Colors would go from completely washed out to very natural, within seconds. Again, I think most of my issues stem from post-production decisions, but I was suprised just how inconsistent the experience was.

Thanks go out to Anthony P for his well wishes as well. I'm doing multiple things right now, but I want to reply to a post of yours (Penton) in another thread, and ask a couple of questions. ~Alan |

Is there going to be a way to download a high quality 1080p 3D version of "The Amazing Spider-Man" trailer? I wont be watching a 3D movie at the cinema any time soon but I was blown away by the 3D depth in the trailer and would like to watch it again at home.

And yes, the 3D was INCREDIBLE. So was the trailer, obviously. ![]() |

Exactly what I was thinking, make the 3D trailer exclusive to the PSN. Huge synergy to let people know the PS3 handles 3D content and drive people to check it out on PSN.

Seems like a bit of a waste to have such a big "3D WORLD CREATED BY SONY" push if they aren't going to release 3D versions of their trailers especially on PSN/SEN. The company has 3D movies, 3D BD players, 3D capable PS3 and 3DTVs and there isn't much of a way for people to access new 3D content. I wonder what the viral sight will how thought I know someone pulled apart the javascript and there is a countdown ending soon.

While I'm comfortable with what I've seen of the story (though it does feel a bit "Didn't we just do this?"), I have to say I'm still not really fanning on the cinematographic look of the new Spider-Man. I had the same response to this latest trailer as I did to the first one. The look, to me, does not feel inviting (in a find-out-more sense) and it strikes some subconscious chord with me that also makes it read a little 'cheap'. It bounces off my rods and cones and somehow sends a "1990's extended cable special" message to my brain.

Not to worry. You don’t even have to run the clip, as actually the arrow on the screenshot of the above YouTube video points to the layer of rods and cones to which Doc is referring. Hey Saprano, one could more clearly see this if the source were a 4k Blu-ray as exhibited on a 4k TV.

Wrote up 1500 words on TPM in 3D, after seeing it twice last night (pending editorial) - long story short, it's I think a very well done conversion, for the most part subtle and pleasing with moments where they take it up a notch.
First screening was on an (old) Sony 2K projector, and it looked dark and crappy. Second was at the accross-the-hall "AVX" theatre (same as what AMC does with their fake IMAX), with Christie 4K. Absolutely night and day difference, WAY brighter, much better colour and contrast. Also was a/b'ing between my Oakleys and the free glasses - the Oakeleys are definitely darker, but far clearer, allowing for much better detail. $150? Maybe not, but a definite improvement. Will link to full review when it's live, if you'd like. |

You mean, George "Bringing-It-All-On-Myself" L.?
I can't share your sympathy for a guy who doesn't recognize that 'more criticism than almost anyone' comes, naturally, with the territory of 'more and bigger hits than almost anyone' and who seems to willfully deny what we all know he must surely understand on some level: that no one would begrudge a single tinkering he wanted to tinker if he'd just stick the originals in the damn box, too. Boo hoo- I made some of the most popular, successful and beloved movies of all time and these terrible fans keep wanting them. Do problems get more 'first-world'? |
