Let's be clear. Apple Computer had a license from Apple Records to use the name, except for the music business with the implication being that Apple Computer could not form a record label called "Apple".

When Apple Computer started iTunes and produced iPods, Apple Records sued Apple Computer. The only problem is that except in name and as an owner of certain copyrights, Apple Records had pretty much ceased to exist. Apple Records sued Apple Computer and they eventually settled. I believe now that Apple (the comptuer company) now owns the name and licenses it back to Apple Records as part of that settlement. And that settlement led to the Beatles finally being available on iTunes.

The whole thing was ridiculous anyway. No one would have ever confused Apple Records with Apple Computer.

No one is expecting any collector to buy every film out there, i was referring more to the person who may of just recently 'got into' bluray. Rentals through streaming services are going to turn their heads, no question. That is why i think peter's argument is relevant. I see streaming services as a
straight rival to bluray. Absolutely.
Yes and so what? Every product/service has a value proposition. BD's value proposition is the highest quality of picture and sound available in a consumer format, sometimes combined with extras that you can't get in the rental/download market.

Streaming has the convenience and almost-instant gratification combined with the ability to view the content almost anywhere. Usually, and especially for catalog titles, it also has a far lower price point (although so does catalog DVD). People who use streaming find that this value proposition exceeds the quality proposition that BD provides.

In addition, so many films produced today have no lasting value (IMO). When you've seen them once, you never need to see them again. For films of that nature, streaming makes more sense than purchasing BD.

So sure, they compete. But they each also compete with everything else for leisure time: theatrical viewings, television, surfing the web, tweeting, listening to the radio, bike riding, hiking, shopping in a physical store, etc. That doesn't make each one the enemy of the other.

Different strokes for different folks and all that...Personally, I still prefer owning a title on BD. But for many younger people who grew up with computers and spend their lives on their devices, owning physical media makes little sense to them. When young people come into my living room and still see 400 LPs, 600 CDs, 200 DVDs/BDs and piles of coffee-table books (and that's aside from the books and journals that I keep in the den), they think I'm insane. Even though the media is all stored neatly on shelves, they probably think I'm a hoarder. And there are times when I think I should "go Zen" and get rid of everything (store electronically) except for the most beautiful books, some CD boxed sets and the most beautifully packaged BDs.

I have no issue with outsourcing films to other studios as long as the quality does not suffer, and if Sony is responsible for the quality, that's all the reassurance I need.

However, I was really disappointed to notice that thread whenever I clicked over to Blu-ray.com earlier today. Back years ago when there was a poll as to which Sony films we'd like on Blu-ray.com, I remember voting for AGAIG. I liked the film quite a bit, and interestingly enough, so did my Grandmother whom I mentioned passed away in October.

Four of my favorite films are coming out from now through May... films which I'd love to have, but I find it doubtful I will be able to afford anytime in the next several months. As much as I'd love to have them now, I can at least find solace that I can purchase them at a later date in time. Sadly, from what I was reading, it appears that that will not be the case with AGAIG.

Sure, it's just a movie, but I'm disappointed nonetheless...

Please explain your logic here. I don't follow how one's decision to buy or rent has any relation to quality...

IMO, you can absolutely rent a movie of any qualify if you want to. I rent all the time and love doing it. If I like the movie enough, I'll buy it. If not, oh well, I didn't waste money -- which frees up money for more rentals and possible purchases.

And then why not a Windows phone? Have you even looked at and tested some? There's a legitimate third choice in the market now.

Plus you don't have to choose only one manufacturer and there's options of size, style, and additional features.

Though they may still be compressed (at this time), I believe the future is looking bright for better quality music on iTunes.
It's still lossy.

Think of all the BDs you could have purchased if not for that iPad and data plan.

I don't like Windows Phones. I like Android phones, but prefer the iPhone.

I currently have a Samsung phone. I intend on choosing Apple as the manufacturer (Apple) of my next one. It comes with a smaller size, different style, and additional features my phone does not have.

I already said that. However, there is a dramatic improvement over the older files.

I don't have a data plan.

There are several things I wouldn't want to live without. My DVR is one, my iPad is another. Though there are multiple BDs I've LOVE to have, I find a FAR greater value with the iPad...

It's the sweat from the Foxconn children that makes them special.

Sort of. The interface and functionality are getting nice reviews, but the difference between their respective app markets is still an immense chasm.

This only matters to you if you don't like the iPhone and that's a pretty small demographic.

One of the cool things about the iPad is it's really cheap compared to the devices it can replace, so you have a lot of cash left for BDs, anyway.

You know what else is made at Foxconn and the like, besides the iPhone and the iPad?

Everything.

This is not said to excuse any unreasonable practices in Apple's supply chain, but to remind you that the available alternative to such issues does not come in Android or Windows flavors. It only comes in abstinence of consumption flavor.

You think a lot of silly things "in three or four years".

I would say that holding your "fad" opinion on the iPad is a fad that died out about a year ago.

That's a rumor...

The sweat from the Foxconn children has little effect. It's the unicorn blood that makes them special...
